Chapter 236: Lucas

The smell of something lemony welcomed Ava the woman she walked inside a large room with an elegant arched doorway. The chandelier above caught her attention not just because it looked like it was floating but because they have bulbs!

Technology doesn’t work in this plane so bulbs are pretty rare. Instead, they use other ways of light. Candles are popular as well as light pearls that are mined and found at the edge of this plane.

A bulb is pretty... rare.

Ava stopped walking when she realized that the two knights who led her towards this place didn’t follow her inside. She looked back and saw that the door behind her was already closed. Those knights didn’t mention anything about this but she assumed this could be part of the rules.

"You look curious."

Ava almost flinched at the familiarity of the voice of the person walking toward her. He was still wearing black, but this time, he didn’t cover his face, revealing his face in the process. His blue eyes seemed to complete his perfect features. The man was indeed very good-looking. Probably even as good-looking as Matthew.

However, Matthew had a mature charm in him while this man... looked playful. Aside from this, he looked like he is in his late twenties or early thirties

He was already holding a silver cup and a lazy smile on his handsome face. His blue eyes met hers.

"Lucas," he said. "You can call me by that name."

"Eve."

"Or Scythe," Lucas said. He sat on the large black chair that looked like a King’s chair except it was just made of black wood without any embellishment or jewels. To be honest, the chair looked more ominous than grand. "I prefer the latter. Scythe sounded mysterious. I love it."

Ava said nothing. She continued observing him and immediately noticed that she couldn’t sense any emotion coming from him. The thing is, she couldn’t sense any magick coming from the man.

"You may take a seat."

"I don’t want to disrespect the man who owns the ninety-ninth floor but... what is your business with me?" she sat opposite him. A circular table separated them.

"Before anything... let me show you something." He waved his hand and a deck of cards floated from behind Ava into Lucas’s hand. "Do you believe in cards?"

"Would you laugh at me when I say no?" Ava asked.

"Perhaps." He chuckled, his blue eyes twinkled with mischief. "Would you like me to read your future?" he asked.

"No."

"That’s a first," he said. "My readings can be very accurate."

"The only constant in this world and my world is changing."

"Smart. But our fate is already written in the stars."

"You can always change the future. Whatever it is that was written in the stars is fleeting. They change."

"Very well," Lucas flicked his hand and the cards disappeared. "I wouldn’t force you."

"I came here because I want to know about what you are offering."

"How did you know I want to offer you something? Perhaps, I am just interested because of your meteoric rise."

"Meteoric rise or not, there is no way that someone like you who had been in this seat for hundreds of years would just invite me. I heard you never invited anyone else before me."

"Ah, rumors are already spreading," Lucas sighed. "But that is indeed the truth. I applaud you for being smart. For that, I wouldn’t kill you."

Ava clenched her jaw. The man could clearly use magick but she couldn’t sense anything from him. No burning smell, no sparkles. Nothing. None. Nada.

To be honest, Ava thought he was some knight earlier. He had daggers on his clothes so she thought he could be some guard or an expert assassin. She misjudged him.

"But since you looked like you were in a hurry, I wouldn’t waste my time too. I want your ring." Lucas pointed at the snake ring on her finger.

"What?" Ava frowned. Damon told her this was Lilith’s grimoire and that no one else would notice this. To other people, this would look like an ordinary ring. No stone, simple and cheap.

"I could of course rob it but... I am being very polite. So I am asking you to give it to me."

"This ring... was given by someone as a gift. It had no value."

"Ah... witches and their lies." Lucas rolled his eyes. Then he crossed his legs and said, "Why not just give it to me? That ring is useless to you."

Ava gulped. Useless? This man was right in that part.

Ava never told Damon about this but the ring... didn’t contain anything aside from some spells that had been banned on Earth. She even started doubting if this was really Lilith’s grimoire. However, instead of complaining to Damon, she kept quiet because she didn’t want him to assume something weird like maybe she was a fae or a dragon.

Ava was already thinking about Matthew and her real parentage. Then there was the mating thing and her mark that disappeared. She was too tired and lazy to think about other theories about her past.

"This is very— "

"Only demons can inherit The Book of Lilith, Eve. It wouldn’t do you any good if you bring such a thing to your world."

"My world?"

"Earth."

"You— "

"I did my research," Lucas looked proud. "I knew you were from the Pits, Erduva Kingdom, right?"

"That doesn’t tell you anything about me."

"I also happen to know that you had been running around, provoking people. In fact, one of the reasons why you were fighting nonstop is because of a demon inside Erduva." fгeewёbnoѵel_cσm

Ava got up.

"Don’t... even think about it," Lucas uttered. "I had no interest in you. I am only interested in that ring."

"The Book of Lilith only works when a demon is wearing it?"

"Yes. The real Book of Lilith was covered by some spells that you can probably comprehend but the contents of that book are something that someone like you would never understand."

"And— What are you offering?" Ava asked.

"I could let you out of this place," Lucas uttered. "With your memory... "

"What did you just say?"
