It was an insult.
A huge insult to the King and the Queen as well as Ulva. Yet, in front of Matthew, Drigo could do nothing aside from glaring at him. Soon, he moved his gaze to Ava who looked just as surprised and irritated as them. Slowly, a plan appeared on Drigo’s mind.
While Drigo was silently scheming, the King and the Queen already took their seats. Both of them had serene expressions on their faces. Obviously, everyone was uncomfortable with what Ava and Matthew did, but the two were quick to change their mood.
"I do not appreciate your disrespect, Matthew." This time, it was the queen who spoke. "We all know how— "
"Enough — " The King interrupted his wife. "We are not here to talk about that."
When Ava heard that, she couldn’t help but stare at the King. Ava was standing behind Matthew and since the King was sitting right across Matthew, she could clearly see the older man’s expression.
And there was nothing on it. It was clearly blank. Ava wondered why the man could easily say something like that to his queen in front of everyone else.
Why was he dropping his facade?
Did something change?
In response, the Queen’s face turned red. She pursed her lips and lowered her head, avoiding everyone’s gaze. It wasn’t clear if she wanted to stop herself from crying or if she was too angry because of the King’s actions. Either way, Ava found this interaction very interesting.
She would love to create some more drama for this two.
"Ulva?" The King said. Almost immediately, Ulva who was standing behind the King held her hand. A small firework appeared in her hand. The light melded together and soon it transformed into letters.
It was an invitation!
What a fancy way to do it! Ava mused inwardly.
"The grand conference of the Lycans, Alliance of Witches, Were’s, Keepers and Trillium is going to be held inside this plane," Ulva said.
"Oh?" Matthew lifted an eyebrow.
"It will happen in a few days," Ulva added. "Representative from various shifting communities will be coming here two days from now and is going to stay for three days, two nights to discuss important matters that are currently threatening our existence."
"And I want you and Drigo to join in my stead." The King said.
"Why is that?" Matthew asked.
"This is an honor!" The Queen hissed. "It’s your responsibility!"
"I know it is my responsibility but I am wondering why my father, the King wouldn’t join the conference considering this is the first time that the Lycans opened its doors to other supernatural. Isn’t that going to affect the name of the mighty Lycans?’ Matthew reasoned without hiding the sarcasm in his voice. He was staring at the Queen, as if silently challenging her to say something, to refute what he just said.
"That— "
"I will be there to welcome everyone but I won’t join the conference. I believe it is time that I see your capabilities."
Matthew said nothing. He just continued staring at his father until the King cleared his throat. Matthew immediately looked away and smiled at Ulva.
"Is that so?" Matthew said. "So... you are going to let us do something for them?"
"For us," the Queen said. "While we have been staying here for hundreds of years, we cannot deny that we are a part of the shifter family. We believe it is time that we show them our strength. We have been hiding for too long, like a giant beast waiting for the opportunity to show our fangs. We— "
"Fangs that we don’t really have," Matthew interrupted the Queen’s words. He leaned forward as he rested his elbows on his knees. "You could use all the flamboyant words while speaking but that won’t change the facts that the Lycans have become weak."
A thick suffocating silence followed Matthew’s words.
"The Lycans rely too much on witches," Matthew added. "Is that what you wanted to show to everyone, father?"
Another silence followed. Even the Queen looked surprised when she heard Matthew’s words. However, she cannot deny that he was only stating facts.
"It was because of the curse— "
"Curse?" Matthew smirked. "You thought it was because of the witch that cursed the Lycans?"
"Isn’t that so?" Ulva chimed in but quickly changed the topic. "However, this is no time to discuss that. I understand that you are looking down on your brothers and sisters but you have to understand that the reputation of the Lycans relies on your accomplishments in this conference."
Ulva continued. "You have to understand. The witches outside of this plane are starting to snoop around. Not just them. The keepers and trillium are starting to send spies. Even the shifters that were clearly weaker than us dared to silently challenge us! They are starting to look down on the Lycans!"
Matthew said nothing.
Because of this, Ulva continued speaking. "The King decided to accept Trillium’s proposition to do the conference inside our plane. This would be the first time that we are going to accept guests so everyone is expected to do their part. All witches," Ulva glanced at Ava. "Are required to help out for the preparation while all the Royals needed to do their part in welcoming the guests."
"Ulva will see to it that all of the Royals are going to show themselves to everyone." The King said. "It is customary that the Royals are going to make the guests feel welcomed."
"So... you wanted to see which one of us could entertain the guests better?" Matthew asked.
"No." The King said. "I wanted you to participate in the two major topics that will be discussed. The Rogues and Hybrids."
"Rogues and Hybrids..." Matthew’s lips thinned.
"Yes. Then I want you to volunteer yourselves to help solve these two major problems that have been haunting the shifter and witch community."
"So, you wanted us to remove a problem that had existed for years?" Matthew asked.
"Yes. Is that going to be a problem?"
