Chapter 287: Jests and Patience

For a few seconds, everyone stared at Matthew. Each of them was thinking different things.

Drigo wanted Matthew to talk back and argue with the King.

The Queen wanted Matthew to agree and act arrogant in front of the King. Once Matthew fail, he could never show himself in front of the King again.

Of course, Ulva’s thoughts were the same as the King’s. Both of them wanted Matthew to agree without asking questions. Though, given Matthew’s current phase, agreeing without any argument might be a very hard thing to do.

"Alright," Matthew smiled.

"Eh?" Just like Ulva everyone was surprised to hear Matthew’s answer.

"You— You are going to deal with the Hybrids?" The Queen asked.

"The Hybrids?"

"No. The Hybrids are too dangerous," the King chimed in. Why don’t you deal with the rogues instead?

"Alright." Again, Matthew’s answer surprised them. Even the King was speechless. For the first time since he walked inside Matthew’s room, he showed something on his face.

This was because he didn’t mean what he just said!

When he said that the Hybrids are too dangerous, he actually meant to challenge Matthew! He wanted him to volunteer to take care of the Hybrids because of his pride! Moreover, the King just received news from the spies that Ava’s brother had become some sort of a Hybrid and was hidden underground! This would be the chance for Matthew to fix or do something about Ava’s brother!

Isn’t that enough reason for Matthew to choose the Hybrids instead of dealing with rogues?

The King and Queen and even Drigo actually expected Matthew to choose Hybrids!

"You wanted to deal with the rogues?" the Queen wanted to confirm.

"Yes."

"But you have been dealing with the Hybrids. In fact, we received reports that— "

"Because the King, his majesty, the Sun of this Kingdom said so."

Boom!

Matthew’s words were akin to a loud thunder inside the Queen’s head.

Matthew was using the King as a shield!

Even if the Queen or Drigo or even Ulva wanted to speak, they wouldn’t dare say anything because of the King’s words.

The King fell into Matthew’s trap!

"His majesty said it would be dangerous for me. And I agree. Dealing with Hybrids is very dangerous. I wouldn’t want to put myself in danger." Matthew’s words only pissed everyone off. Everyone except Ava.

Ava always thought that she is very talented in possing people off but her talent isn’t even comparable to Matthew’s!

Wait... was she praising him?

Ava frowned when she realized that she actually thought Matthew was funny.

No. This man isn’t funny at all!

Josef or Matthew or whoever he really was is a dangerous man.

As if sensing her thoughts, Matthew turned and looked at her.

"Isn’t that right, Ava?"

"Yes." Ava smiled. "I thought so too."

"See? Now that we have finally agreed to do something beneficial, then shall we bid each other goodbye? As you know... I have very important things to attend to."

Ava’s face reddened when she heard those words.

This damn man was using her to get out of the current situation. She gritted her teeth in silence. Matthew knew that Ava would never say a thing since, she too, wanted to make these people leave.

"Alright. Ulva will take care of everything. You will receive the news about which delegates are you going to attend to." The King huffed and left without even waiting for Matthew to say a word.

Just like him, the Queen left the room along with Ulva too.

But Drigo didn’t leave immediately. He stared at Matthew and then towards Ava.

"You don’t fit to be King," Drigo uttered.

"I know," Matthew smirked. "Don’t worry brother, I too believe that I can’t be King in this small plane." He got up and stood in front of Drigo. Letting go of his domineering Aura, Matthew stopped just a foot away from his older brother.

"You are mocking the Lycans by fucking a witch!" Drigo continued. "Witches were the reasons why we have become extinct! Why we became weak! Have you fucking lost your mind?"

"Would you want me to lose my mind?" Matthew looked amused. "You wouldn’t actually like that... would you?

"If you don’t want to be King then you leave this plane! Tell father that you don’t want to rule! Do you what you must and give the throne to someone who actually values our kind!"

"Oh, I won’t do that," Matthew answered.

"Why? Why did you have to..."

"Messing with you is more fun than that," Matthew smirked."You know... I always wondered how my mother died."

Matthew continued. "I knew she was poisoned and a witch cursed her but I couldn’t find out who it really was."

"What does this have to do with me?" ƒreewebɳovel.com

"I find it strange," Matthew said. "Many people thought you were close to my mother when she was pregnant. They said you were a kind prince for taking care of Lady Julliane." Drigo was already more than a hundred years old when Matthew was born. He was already considered an adult Lycan.

"You never showed interest in me when I was a child." Matthew leaned forwards. "Was it because you have already accomplished what you wanted to happen to my mother?"

"Are you accusing me of poisoning Lady Julliane?"

"No." Matthew leaned back. His expression turned calm as the smile on his face vanished. "I was asking you. Did you poison my mother?"

"What? Why would I do that!? Lady Julliane helped me when I was a child. It is only right— "

"Your mother hated mine," Matthew interrupted him. "And you respected your mother. Why would a man like you who would do everything your mother asked you to do... approach the woman that she hated?"

"I— "

Again, a smile appeared on Matthew’s face. "I was only jesting," Matthew said. "A joke. No need to be so flustered my older brother."

"You— "

"Don’t worry. I know that you didn’t kill her." Matthew took a step back. "But that didn’t mean you didn’t have a hand in her death." He started walking towards Ava. "I am not a very forgiving person, brother. And I can assure you one thing. One of these days..." Matthew stopped walking and looked back at Drigo. "I will ask for some... payment. You and everyone else... shall repay your debt."

Then Matthew added. "Close the door when you leave.... Older brother."

Hearing this, Drigo scowled then he practically ran out of the room, leaving the door wide open.

Ava used her magick to close the door and reinforced it with more magick to seal the place.

"You said you didn’t want to be King," Ava said. "You didn’t need to be one. You said you only wanted to stay in this place so your enemies won’t be able to sense you. And yet you actually agreed to deal with rogue shifters?"

Matthew only smiled at her. "Am I sensing some concern from my dearest Eve?"

"I only wanted you to keep Matthew’s body safe!"

"So... it’s not just concern. It was love, eh?"

"What the hell are you talking about!?" Ava asked. This man... is very very irritating! He is testing her patience!
