Chapter 288: False King

"The werewolves have something that I need," Matthew said.

She debated for a few seconds as she wondered if he would tell her anything. Then she asked."What is it?"

"Before I was trapped in that hell hole, I left a few of my things to someone that I once trusted. Over the years, when the humans decided to kill each other, the things were given to a few other people." Matthew made a deliberate pause. "Rather, it was given to the ones who helped the humans win their war."

Ava furrowed her brows.

"Is this going to help Matthew’s body?"

"You really like this body, don’t you?"

Ava glared at him, her face hot. It felt like he just caught her doing something naughty. "Is this going to help you hide what you are?" she asked.

"Who knows?"

She huffed in response. The man was enjoying her reactions. Sadly, she couldn’t help it! Her current emotions are in disarray. She wanted to hate him for stealing Matthew’s body but at the end of the day, Josef didn’t actually steal anyone’s body. He was Matthew. They were part of the same soul that just got fragmented when someone trapped him inside The Pits.

She sat down and observed him. Aside from that irritating smirk and sinister gaze, Matthew still looked like Matthew. Maybe the others haven’t noticed anything too.

"That King..." Matthew said. He sat next to her, immediately making her regret why she chose this couch instead of the one-seater just across her. Of course, she didn’t move. She didn’t want to let him know that this— that his presence— is affecting her brain. That would be too embarrassing.

"He is not a Lycan," Matthew spoke.

"Can you please move a bit farther away?" she asked when she noticed that he was deliberately sitting so close to her. In fact, he looked like he was practically trying to push her out of the couch as he scooted over while Ava was trying to move away from him.

"That witch has spies all over the place," Matthew said. "We should be more careful, no?"

Ava rolled her eyes but let him be. Instead, she focused her attention on what he said earlier.

"You said, the King is not a Lycan?"

"Yes. I believe, he might be just like me."

"Like a soul fragment?"

This time, Matthew’s expression changed.

"Yes," he said. "Though I think he must have sensed me. And that was why he was avoiding antagonizing me."

"And why are you telling me this?"

"If you wanted to create some problems then you start with that man. Find out why he wanted to ... move into my body."

"He..." Ava gulped. So... Matthew knew about the vessel thing? "How did you know that?"

"It’s because my body is the body of the strongest Lycan alive."

"Strongest... even stronger than the King?"

"He is a false King. The reason why he wanted to avoid tackling the issues outside of this plane is that he wanted to avoid showing his real strength. Even that Priestess is slightly stronger than him."

Ava turned silent.

Matthew’s revelation is indeed a surprise. But how did he—

"How?" she asked. "If you knew this then they must have— "

"The King might have sensed that I am different but he didn’t know what I am. " He leaned back and spread his arms, resting them on the couch. He looked to relax; the exact opposite of Ava’s stiff body. While she could feel his eyes on her, Ava chose not to turn around to stare at him. She stayed frozen, like a statue. She refused to move her head and met his gaze.

It is better that way.

"If you are worried that they would hurt me, they won’t."

"Who told you that I’m worried?" she harrumphed.

"You know? I didn’t know you had this cute side on you." He chuckled.

Ava rolled her eyes for the umpteenth time.

"How did you know they won’t hurt you?" Ava asked.

"That King has been very patient. I believe he had been moving from body to body for centuries. Do you really think someone like that would carelessly attack someone they don’t know? He is patient and wise. He would wait."

Ava’s gaze turned complicated.

"Wait for what?"

"For me to mess up? I don’t know." Matthew shrugged.

"And? What are you going to do about it?"

"Naturally, I would need your cooperation."

"How?"

"I am leaving for a while."

"You just said this place is the safest— "

"I won’t hurt my body," Matthew interrupted her. "If that’s what you are worried about."

Ava could feel the man’s burning gaze behind her skull. She shivered inwardly.

She felt hot. She swallowed her nonexistent saliva.

"Where are you going?"

"Gather an army..."

Ava immediately turned around.

"Why?"

"I was kidding," Matthew answered. "I need to go visit some people that owe me in the past." She didn’t miss the dangerous glint coming from his eyes. Of course, she pretended not to notice.

She pursed her lips, wondering what she would tell him. Should she tell him to take care? To come back alive? She didn’t want to sound like his wife or that she cared for him.

Actually, she definitely cared for him. In the end, Ava could only sigh inwardly. She was conflicted.

"What do you want me to do?" she asked.

"Take care of yourself. Until I come back."

"What about the conference?" she asked.

"You have to take care of that too."

Ava blinked. "What?"

"You will be my representative. You will become my wife so everyone would— "

"Hold on!" Ava held a hand in front of his face. To her surprise, Matthew just leaned forward and kissed her palm. She jolted, surprised at the sudden contact.

"What is it?" he smiled.

"Who is going to be your wife?" she hissed, a little irritated.

"Why are you asking questions when you already know the answer?" he fired back. "You will become my wife."

"The supernatural world would never allow that."

"Then we shall screw them," Matthew smirked. "Together.
