Chapter 309: People of the Shadow Realm

Huacachina, Peruvian Oasis

Matthew squinted at the lights that seemed to sparkle against the beautiful man-made lake that wasn’t there hundreds of years ago. Tourists’ waves of laughter echoed as they paddle around the lake. Soft music from the bar nearby lingered in the air.

"For a place with about a hundred people..." Matthew said, his voice deep. "This is a very noisy town." The calmness in Matthew’s voice somehow contrasted with the panic in the eyes of the man kneeling before him. The man looked like he was in his late fifties or sixties, his hair was white and balding, his face wrinkled and burnt from the heat of the desert.

"My lord please..." the man begged, his body shaking as tears, snot, and blood can be seen on his pale face. "It wasn’t our intention to give them the relic. We didn’t have a choice."

Matthew gave the man a sinister smile. "Was death never an option?" he asked.

"I— "

"Was it because you have forgotten where you came from?" Matthew sneered. "Did you think hiding in this small town would keep you safe?"

"My lord..."

The man stopped talking when Matthew showed him a knife. It looked like a normal dagger. The only noticeable feature of the dagger was the fact that it looked dull and blunt. However, if one would look closely, one would notice that something black seemed to coat the whole dagger.

"My lord please forgive me. I— "

"Hardrige," Matthew said. "I asked you to guard the relic with your life. And yet here you are... living the life that you want, hiding in this small place with your wealth buried somewhere."

"My lord! I am not lying I am— "

**THWACK**

Matthew didn’t let the man finish as the dagger suddenly flew towards the man’s throat, slitting it in one quick movement.

The man’s body fell on the carpeted floor with a loud thud. Just as blood started to flow out of the man’s body, a dark shadowy figure slowly materialized just on top of the corpse.

"My lord... "

"Ah..." Matthew grinned. "There you are Hardrige, I have missed seeing your real stinky self."

"My lord— "

"Now that you are finally showing yourself, I believe we can talk about my relic. Where is it?"

"My lord— "

"I am not asking you again."

"I— They forced me to give it to them and I— "

"It looked like you have no intention of telling me," Matthew said. "You seemed to have forgotten how capable I am of ending you and everyone that you cherish in this world and ours."

"It is with— " Sadly before the shadow would tell him anything, it started to shake. Then it slowly dissipated into thin air.

Matthew’s face turned grim. He looked at the other humanoid form not far away from him.

"So it was them..." he said. He had originally thought that the demons were the ones who trapped him in The Pits. He was wrong.

"My lord..." the other shadow knelled before him. "Shall I find out how they were able to come into this plane?"

"No need." Matthew snorted. "I know how they were able to get into this plane. It looked like they have been plotting to expose themselves into this world and slowly make it their own."

Matthew then licked the blood from the dagger and closed his eyes. Memories of the man that he just killed immediately filled his head.

"I was right," he said. He always knew that Hardrige— one of the few that he once trusted— love to bury his things somewhere. His memories only confirmed that. "I want you to go bring the others and get his treasures in his lair."

He put his thumb on the shadow’s forehead before watching the shadow disappear.

With his business done, Matthew calmly used what looked like a dark liquid to dissolve the body and left the house. He walked near the lake before he thought of Ava.

Though he was worried about her, he was confident that those people wouldn’t be able to get into that plane. They wouldn’t be able to hurt Ava.

Yes. That place is currently the safest place for his woman. Not long after, a man walked next to Matthew.

"My lord, we may have a bit of a problem," the man said.

"Speak," Matthew said. He never halted his steps and his languid, touristy-like vibe never changed. On the outside, Matthew looked just like one of the tourists who was currently enjoying the night in the Oasis.

"We found traces of them... in Iraq. Sumeria to be exact."

"Tell me more," Matthew said.

"A couple of months ago, a thirteenth tomb was discovered. It was a cursed one."

"And?"

"The curious humans got ahold of someone’s grave and the humans had been trying to open it for months."

"Ah, humans and their tendency to rob graves." Matthew mused. "What seems to be the issue?"

"We believe that it was one of those graves."

"Cain’s?" Matthew asked.

"Yes."

"Unfortunate. It looked like the humans are slowly digging their own graves." Matthew sneered. By the time the humans unleash Cain, Matthew and Ava are no longer in this plane. Who cares if humanity would die? Not him. Definitely not him.

"You may leave and... isolate the area," Matthew said.

The man nodded and left. Almost immediately, a thick magick wrap the area.

Then Matthew stopped walking. He stared at the woman who appeared not far away from him.

"What took you so long?" Matthew had a smug smile on his face.

"You knew I was coming..." the woman lifted an eyebrow as she examined Matthew. "You don’t look like an incomplete one."

"Your kind would never want mine to exist."

"You have no right to walk in this world."

"What gave you the right to say that? Does this world belong to you and your kind?"

The woman squinted then two daggers that looked exactly like the dagger that Matthew used earlier appeared in her hand. But just as she was about to run towards him, Matthew vanished.

"You know..."

Before the woman heard Matthew’s voice, she already felt a dagger in her throat. Then she felt Matthew standing behind her. "I hate it when people don’t listen to me talk," Matthew said as she slashed the woman’s throat. "People of the shadow realm... you will regret trapping me in that place."
