"You are overexaggerating," Ava said. "But I am willing to listen. Let’s talk about this after the conference shall we?"
Actually, Ava just didn’t understand why he was telling her this. Was he trying to recruit her again?
"I was just trying to tell you this because I want you back."
"On Trillium?" Ava sneered. "After everything that happened. You really want me back?"
"Yes. And I understand why you don’t want to come back. But... We need people like you."
"Well, I don’t need Trillium." Plus Ava heard some disturbing facts lately. The fact that the council’s investigation didn’t come up with anything was already a red flag to Ava. They are experimenting on humans, witches, and shifters!
But they were actually cleared?
Well, that was messed up!
Ava wouldn’t want to be associated with an organization like that.
"I know what you think about Hybrids but — Did you even look at that box?"
Ava pursed her lips.
"You didn’t."
"No. I don’t know what’s inside that box. For all, I know it could be something that could harm me. Or kill me. Maybe even control me."
"Samuel would not do that."
"Right. Now you seemed to become his friend after everything that happened? How?"
"Look... the reason why they sent him away was that he wanted you to be safe and— "
"I would have been safer if I knew everything from the very start."
"Don’t be stubborn, we all know you would have tried to attack Trillium if you knew everything from the start."
Actually, Jude was right. It seems that the man knew her more.
Seeing her reaction, Jude sighed. "Come on... can you at least say that you will think about it? And maybe even check the box?"
"I will think about it," Ava said.
"And the box?"
"I will think about that too."
Jude sigh.
"I already have a lot of things on my mind." Ava was actually telling the truth. With Matthew and the rogues and the relics, she couldn’t find the time to work on other things. Plus, there’s Ulva who is now enraged because of what happened and the King.
Until now, Ava had no clue what he was. Or what IT was.
Drigo and her mother are another troublesome matter.
And now, Trillium?
Nope.
No uh.
"Alright. Just think about it."
This time, Ava nodded.
"So, you came to see me just because of that?"
"I— " Jude hesitated as he looked at Francheska who was not far away from them. "Actually, about that Lycan."
"He has a name."
"Matthew. Right. I always forget, sorry about that." Jude rolled his eyes. "Where is he?"
"Why are you asking?"
"I wanted to talk."
"You can talk to me instead."
"He is going to deal with the rogues, right?"
"Right."
"Then... he should be careful about the northern packs."
"You mean north of the US? Justin and his ’friends?’"
"Yes."
"Why?"
"They tend to think they are kings and working with them can be very difficult."
"Alright. Thanks for the warning."
"Are you going to work with Matthew on this one?"
"Yes."
"Then you should be careful too. Witches tend to... magically disappear near their pack houses."
"So they hate witches? I thought all shifters hate witches?"
"We have launched an investigation but it seems that the other covens aren’t really interested in it. Witches had been dying. Burned."
"That’s interesting."
"We found out something else."
"What is it?"
"They are burned by the same type of fire. And it’s not from this world."
Ava immediately thought of the fire that Damon gave her when she was inside the pits. Was that just some coincidence?
"When?" she asked.
"It started happening five months ago. Eight witches have died since then. This didn’t include the witch that died when you were working with me."
"But this isn’t the first case, right?" Ava smirked.
"Right. There was one in Newyork and then in New Jersey."
"The fire." She was talking about the case of the woman that was burned to a crisp inside her house before she was supposed to be punished with Trillium’s Capital punishment for exposing her coven to humans.
She died miserably but Ava didn’t know if Trillium or Jude decided to make that a local case. At that time, they were pretty adamant that it was an isolated case.
"So, you should take care of yourself."
"Geez, thanks for the warning. I didn’t know you care that much."
"Would you stop being so sarcastic?"
"Nope," Ava smiled. "It’s nice seeing you, Jude."
"I heard about the werewolves!" he said. "That witch was killed that night."
"That’s sad," Ava frowned.
"You really love creating troubles."
"Why thank you! I am taking that as a compliment."
"Take care V. And I really hope you could come work with us again."
"Only if you give me all the power and make me my own boss," she joked.
"Are you sure?"
Of course, Ava nodded. She knew that Trillium was all about hierarchy. How could they give a witch like her, someone who had destroyed their facility, authority? That would be akin to shooting their own foot with their own gun!
"Now, you go and spend some time with her," Ava said.
"How about you?"
"I am going to walk around."
"Are you sure?"
"Of course. I will see you during the conference tomorrow."
"You will join?"
"As Matthew’s representative. He is busy."
"He wanted you to represent him?"
"Yes."
"Are you his wife or something?"
This time, Ava said nothing. So, Jude asked again.
"Are you his wife?"
"Assistant."
"Assistant?"
"Right," Ava said. "Alright. Off you go. Enjoy it." Ava said. She thought the man was eyeing his own secretary. Something must have happened between the two or that woman would be following him around.
"And oh..." Ava stopped walking. "The one from New Jersey was killed by someone different."
"How did you know that?"
"The type of fire that was used... was different. The one if Newyork was killed by another type of fire." After spending some time in the Pits, Ava was positive that the one in Newyork was killed by someone else and the one in New Jersey should be killed by someone who wanted to kill witches.
She also got it wrong the first time.
Jude nodded. "Thanks, I am sending the file to your email."
Ava was about to complain and tell him that there was no internet connection there. But Jude was already walking towards Francheska. She snorted and turned the other way instead.
She only worked with Trillium for a year but she actually like that job. Aside from the killing, she actually thinks that she excelled as an investigator. Ava started walking away from them. The conference already started today and obviously, Ava couldn’t come as she wasn’t exactly invited. Ulva also stopped sending her witches to watch over Ava.
Ulva already lost Mildred, she must be scared to lose another witch.
So, that old woman is going to think of something else...
Ava smiled.
She could read that woman like a damn piece of a damn book.
With her status and the insult that she received because of what Ava did, Ulva will surely do her best to try and kill Ava.
