Chapter 32: A Mate’s Protection

Ava sat inside Matthew’s office, an ugly expression was written all over her face. She crossed her arms against her chest.

"Say that again?" Ava asked.

"I said... stay in the mansion. With me."

"And why would I do that?"

Matthew sighed in response.

"Its because you are not safe out there." He said.

"So... if I am with you. I am safe?"

He nodded.

"I could protect you."

"I can protect myself. Thank you very much." Ava was quick to rebut him.

"You don’t understand."

"Then make me understand!" Ava hated arguing with people. However, what she hated the most was being treated like a child. "You said, Lycans are going to want me to work for them. Is that the reason why you wanted to keep me close?"

Actually, she could feel Matthew’s anxiety and she knew he was scared. However, despite knowing his emotions, she couldn’t read his mind. She had no clue why he was acting like this.

"I promise to protect you."

"True. But you didn’t say anything about making me a prisoner."

"I am not going to make you a prisoner."

"Then why keep me here and not let me out of your sight until we fix this matter?" she hissed. She always loved working alone because she knew working with other people could complicate things. She thought working with the Lycans would be of her best interest.

This decision was also because of Samuel.

But a Lycan who wanted to keep her by his side is out of her expectations.

She pursed her lips and watched as anxiety flashed in his eyes. He was hiding something from her. And this is just making her more and more confuse.

Seeing his dark expression, Ava added, "I saw Amelia." freewebnovel-cσ๓

"During that— "

Ava nodded in response. "She was kept in a room full of iron. No windows either. She’s alive and just as you said... she’s safe. They are feeding her well and she was well provided with everything that a pregnant woman needed."

His expression turned gloomier. He gave her an intense look, so intense, she could feel it bore inside her soul. For some reason, he didn’t doubt her words.

"You have suspicions?" she asked.

He nodded in response.

Since he didn’t mention anything, she thought it had nothing to do with her. After all, Matthew hired her just to find the witch. However, the fact that she was now endager because of his clan changed everything.

"Tell me," she said.

In response, he got up on his chair and refilled his glass of bourbon. The smell of alcohol and anger was thick inside the room. Though, she knew that Matthew’s anger was directed at someone else.

Since she arrived to give him an update after seeing Amelia in her dreams the other night, the man has been in a foul mood. He didn’t say a thing and just kept on staring at her until he finally told her to stay here until they solve the matter about the Lycans.

"I don’t want you to get more involve into this matter. The lesser you know, the better." Matthew said.

"So you don’t trust me."

"It’s not that."

"Then what is it?"

"It’s better if you don’t know."

She clenched her jaw, irritation flashing in her eyes. After a night of not seeing each other, Matthew was already acting mysterious around her. It was as if the man was full of secrets she couldn’t fathom.

Seeing his disinterest to tell her anything, she got up.

"Since you are not planning to tell me then... I will find it out on my own."

She was about to walk towards the door when he suddenly appeared before her. She silently cursed his speed. He was far stronger and faster than her— the fact irritated her.

"You are blocking my way."

"I can’t let you leave." Matthew said.

"And you think you can stop me?" She snorted. "Cute."

"I won’t hurt you," he growled. "I need you with me. You are safe with me. Only me."

"Look..." she put her hand on her waist. "Did you really think I would just sit here and wait for your kind to come and slaughter me or drag me to wherever it is that you came from?"

His gaze was hot, fervid. It sent her stomach tumbling into lust.

Dammit!

She had been having endless dreams about him and everytime that he was with her, her body was reacting weirdly. This wasn’t something that she could just explain with the fact that she had been in abstinence for too long. No. She knew that something else was going on here.

Of course, she had been trying to deny this fact since she realized it.

To her, this is just another job, another way to find out the truth about her mother’s killer.

"You need to stay." Matthew said.

"Nope."

"I said stay."

"Why would I stay? Matthew, I am your employee! Since the other Lycan’s want me then they can go ahead and try to capture me for all I care but I would warn you... I am going to fight. I’m not staying here and cower in fear. I was trained to fight, Matthew. And I will die trying to fight against people who want to enslave me!"

Matthew shook his head.

"That can’t happen."

"What?"

"I am not letting you leave." His chest raised and fell in an abrupt rhythm. She knew, he was trying to hold back.

She frowned at the flicker of insanity in his silver eyes. Under his shadowed face, his eyes seemed to glow, making him look more intimidating, dangerous.

Ava could feel the hair at the back of her neck stand.

She took a step back, ready to cast a spell if he would do something dangerous.

"I promise to protect you."

"And you can do that even if I stay at my house why you stay at yours." Living together is just crazy. The attraction between them is getting stronger and living together would only make things worse.

She would never let that happen.

"My wolf won’t let you leave," Matthew said. His voice was low, too low it sounded like he was whispering. But she couldn’t deny the danger that laced his voice.

"Wolf? What does this have to do with your wolf?"

Different array of emotions flashed inside him, hitting her like a huge boulder. But this didn’t surprise her. What surprised her were his next words.

"As my mate... my wolf is bound to protect you. You are in this situation because of us. And we will get you out of it. Safely."
