Chapter 338: A Deal with the Devil

"You cannot do that."

"Why not?" Matthew’s lips lifted into a sadistic smile that surprised Drigo. He had never heard Matthew say something as callous as this. Despite the smile on Matthew’s face, Drigo could sense that he was serious.

"How could you say that? Do you really want to kill all the — "

"Who cares if they die? Not me."

"Is it because of A— Miss Woods?"

"I don’t think that is any of your business. All I want you to do is create some change in this place. And you live."

"We can’t just change— "

"A small change is a change." Matthew got up. "You have to start somewhere."

"So you are going to make me face all the backlash while you enjoy your marriage?"

"It’s either that... or you die."

"What about my mother? And our siblings?"

"You can do what you want. However... they better not touch my bottom line."

"And that is Miss Woods?"

Matthew only smiled before he started walking away.

"I have a question."

Matthew looked back as he halted his steps.

"Why?" Drigo asked. "You are strong and you seemed to know what you are doing. So why let me be the King? Being a King could give you whatever it is that you want."

"What do I want?" Matthew shook his head. The thing is... he already got what he wanted the most. "Do not overthink. It is still better to be nice and quiet and do your job. Make sure not to tell anyone about this."

"I won’t."

"Good. Because I would know." Matthew said. Before he started walking, he threw something toward Drigo.

On instinct, Drigo caught it.

"What is this?" It was a coin. A large one. A gold coin without anything on it.

"Keep it. Do not lose it. That might just save your life."

Matthew said before he left the room. Not long after, Drigo got up. However, before he could get out of the room, the door opened, revealing his mother, his first wife Lady Romina de Clavell— the leader of his knights.

"Are you alright?" Romina had the look of worry in her eyes. "I heard that he came here. Did he hurt you?"

Drigo immediately look at his mother who still looked distraught. He couldn’t help but wonder if they had seen Matthew on their way here.

Before he could answer his wife’s question, another woman arrived.

"Where is he?"

"Lady Tricia...why are you..."

"Did he hurt you?"

Drigo sighed inwardly.

In the past, he always likes the fact that his wives always gave him the attention that he need. He had eight and all of them came from prominent families.

He and his women already expected that he would become King and had been training to manage this plane.

But after what Matthew told him, Drigo couldn’t even dare to look at them.

What would happen if he suddenly change everything? Changing the customs could only create more trouble. Plus, everyone was already so used to having witches as slaves.

How could they even begin to accept the fact that the witches that they always treated as slaves would now become their equals?

"Are you alright?"

"Drigo did something happen?"

"You don’t look too well..."

"Did he try to — did he hurt you?"

"No." Drigo shook his head. Suddenly, he felt tired— so exhausted.

Now, he realized something. It would have been better if Matthew physically hurt him than leave him alone. That would be better than the responsibility that Matthew just gave him.

For a moment, he started wondering if agreeing to Matthew’s terms was the right thing to do.

Then he laughed inwardly.

Did he even have any choice?

When Matthew walked inside the room, the only choice that he had was to live or die.

And he chose to live.

Now, he needs to face the consequence of his actions.

"I need to see father— "

"That’s perfect, he wanted to see us too."

"Is that why you are here?" Drigo asked his second wife Tricia. Then he looked behind her and realized that all of his wives are there.

This only means one thing.

The King summoned them.

Meaning, the King would step down and proclaim Drigo as the next King.

According to the Lycan Laws, there are only a few reasons why a living King could step down and hand the crown to the next King.

One of them is if they are ill. He couldn’t help but wonder what reason would the King used to give him the crown.

He sighed inwardly.

This only proves that Matthew’s words were true. Matthew wanted Drigo to work for him. Did Matthew do the same thing to their father?

Seeing as how Matthew could easily control them the only thing that Drigo wanted to know now was... why?

Was it just because of Ava?

Was it because Ava was a witch?

Did Matthew just throw everything that he was supposed to have for a woman?

For a moment, Drigo thought about his wives and wonder if he could throw away the throne for one of them.

It didn’t even take him ten seconds to decide that none of them is worth it.

He married them to obtain the crown. And he would never give up the crown just to be with any of them.

After this realization, Drigo felt a sudden dread in his chest. Suddenly, he felt heavy and irritated.

How could Matthew sacrifice the crown just for a damn witch?

Maybe one of these days, he would understand Matthew’s actions. But not now. fгeewebnovёl.com

Definitely not now.

"We shall go," Drigo said. "We couldn’t let our King wait."

Despite all this in his head. He couldn’t help but smile.

Now that he is the King, he could do everything as long as he is not going to touch Matthew’s bottom line— Ava.

He held the coin that Matthew gave him and put it in his pocket. Despite his joy, he couldn’t seem to erase the feeling that... he just made a deal with the devil.

.....

What do you think of Drigo’s train of thought?
