Chapter 345: Worth a Try

Matthew stared at Ava’s sleeping face, watching as the fire not far away from them illuminated her beautiful features.

She was sleeping just next to him. So close... yet so far away.

Matthew had to stop himself from devouring her, from taking her clothes off, ripping them apart, and watch her squirm under his touch. His maddening need and hunger for her challenged his sanity over and over again.

But not now...

No.

His body isn’t complete yet.

But it will be... soon. freeωebnovēl.c૦m

He could actually give in to his needs. The fact that she wanted him too wasn’t even a secret. Her words were opposite to what her body was feeling. And he knew that just like him, it took her a lot to stop herself too.

But again, this isn’t the time for that.

Making love to her would only make her weaker. The ring that she was wearing was only stopping him from absorbing her life force. It was making her safe. But making love with her was just a different matter.

It would affect her magick.

And at this point... that might be enough to kill her.

He sighed and lie down next to her. Then he stared at the endless darkness that the sky had offered. Despite the stars, the sparkling jewels that lit up the space, all he could see was the darkness around it.

It might be a depressing thought but before anything else was created, there was only darkness. Before the light, the stars, the sun, and the moon were darkness.

And that was him.

The endless darkness.

He let out a burst of mocking laughter.

He pursed his lips and then stared at Ava again. Despite everything, they were still together and that— that was the most satisfying thing that he had felt.

After a few minutes, he carried her towards the cabin and tucked her into the bed. She could still smell her frustration when he suddenly stopped earlier. But soon, she would understand.

He didn’t stop because he wanted to.

He stopped because he is saving her... from himself.

Matthew then walked out of the cabin, he held his hand towards the bonfire and watched as black smoke swallowed it until it no longer existed.

Darkness took over.

Then the bulb that littered the area around the cabin lit up. Ava would have loved to see this, he was sure of it. But yes... it could wait.

They still have an eternity together.

After a few hours, Matthew finally decided it was time to sleep. Ava insisted that they stay in different bedrooms and that was fine. At least the temptation wasn’t that strong when they are not together.

Another sigh left his lips.

So close.... Yet so far away.

..................

Queen Margery’s eyes were swollen not from crying but from being awake for hours. Since Drigo was declared the new King by her very own husband, Queen Margery found it hard to sleep.

She was anxious and scared and started to get paranoid. The fact that Matthew left not long after made her think that he was planning something, some sort of scheme that would hurt her son.

After a few minutes of staying in bed, she got up, grabbed some wine, and went back to bed with a bottle of vodka in her hand.

She then turned at the vacant spot next to her.

When was the last time he occupied this space? Her very own husband seemed to be full of mysteries, full of secrets.

She wondered what her husband had talked about with Matthew that day.

Was he scheming with Matthew?

What about her?

Matthew seemed to know that she did something to his mother. Did he tell the King about it?

Is the King going to harm her now?

And why would he make Drigo the new King when he was still alive? While Matthew is still alive?

The threat that Matthew poses to the throne right now is even bigger.

The Queen knew that something else was going on.

Distress, she walked out of her room. With her long robe, she walked out of her palace and went towards the King’s abode.

"Why did you come?"

Surprisingly, the King was still awake. He too had a hard time sleeping.

"Is that how you welcome your wife?" she asked without hiding the sarcasm in her voice.

The King gave her a completed look. Gone were the days that he would look at her with gentleness and care. Gone were the days when he would make an effort to even fake it.

Right now, he just stared at her as if.... As if she was some acquaintance that he had not seen for years. Now that she thought about it, he had lost a lot of weight lately. She started to wonder if he had been sleeping or eating well.

"I have heard that there was a lot of chaos lately..." she said.

"It was nothing." He was also in his robe, a bottle of wine in his hand, his lips were dry, his eyes a little red. She figured this was because of the stress. Talking— No— that wasn’t even talking. It was more like arguing with them.

Right.

Having an argument with nobles almost every day would be very draining.

"Why would you suddenly change the rules?" she asked. "Does it have anything to do with what you told Matthew that day? Did he threaten you? Did he— "

"Enough." The King said. "I don’t want to have this conversation with you. But Matthew never asked me to do anything."

"I don’t believe you."

"It is cold. Return to your palace."

The Queen stared at him. She always knew that he would never say a word to her. But still... it was worth a try.

After all, she had been his wife for more than a century. A century of love and respect. Or at least that was what she thought.

She turned around and started walking. This time, she didn’t walk towards her palace but into the gardens. All she wanted was some time alone to think...

"If you wanted to get rid of him..." the Queen flinched when she heard a deep voice behind her. She turned, almost ready to fight as the shadow revealed itself into the light. "I can help you," the voice added.

....

Authors note: After a century of marriage or living together, do you think you will still love your spouse or partner? I don’t know it was such a weird thought. XD
