"What does that mean?" Ava asked.
"I— "
"We are leaving," Matthew suddenly said.
"Please sit down, Matthew," Ava uttered.
"I said— "
"I said sit the fuck down!" Ava hissed.
"You are not safe here. Not with that woman."
Ava sighed and ignored Matthew.
"Tell me what you mean," Ava said. She could feel Matthew’s anger, pulsating towards her way. It was dark almost murderous. She had never felt someone’s bloodlust as thick as his.
Right, Matthew wanted to kill Anna.
Ava narrowed at him.
"Stop that," she said. "You cannot kill her."
Thankfully, Matthew seemed to back down. Instead, he moved just opposite them. He leaned against the wall just next to the window, his eyes were outside the house.
"That Chairman gathered the strongest supernaturals living in this village. Funny how he thought that would be enough to stop me."
Ava gritted her teeth. The man was blatantly threatening the Priestess!
"Matthew... please follow me," Ava said as she looked at the Priestess. "I will be back." Without waiting for the woman’s permission, Ava grabbed Matthew and took him just a few steps away from the Priestess. Then she used her magick to seal the space, making it private.
"What are you doing?"
"She knows you before you even introduced yourself!"
"And?" Ava frowned. They were so close together, she could feel his blood humming with irritation and frustration. "She’s a witch! She could have put something around this village! She already said it, she would know if someone walks inside the barrier of this place!"
"I don’t believe her."
"Then let me listen to her!"
"She’s hiding something. I don’t like it!"
"Was it really like that?" Ava lifted an eyebrow.
"What?" he narrowed in response.
"Was it really because of that or because she just said something about your past?" Ava asked.
"What— "
"Right. You didn’t want me to know anything about you or your past. Because you fucking wanted to protect me!" She didn’t hide the sarcasm in her voice.
"I could not let them hurt you!"
"Whose them!?" she asked. Just as she expected, Matthew turned to silence. "Who the fuck are you talking about?" she asked.
"You cannot say it..." Ava snorted. "You wanted to keep it a secret, right?"
"I would tell you when the time— "
"Oh shut up..." Ava said. "You really think I’m stupid, right? Was it because I have been too accepting of this? About what happened?"
"Eve— "
"Don’t you fucking call me by that name!" Ava said. "I am not Eve!"
"Yes, you are!"
"No." Ava shook her head. "I am not Eve and if you really wanted to be with someone named Eve then maybe you should find her somewhere else because there is no Eve here!"
"Did you really believe her words?"
"If I did, I would have sent you something far away so you wouldn’t be able to interrupt me!" Ava said. "I am not that stupid to believe someone I just met!"
"Then why are we staying!?" he asked. Surprisingly, Matthew never yelled or raised his voice. He was hissing and trying to keep his voice calm. It was the exact opposite of Ava.
Right now, she was really angry.
And well...
She wasn’t that good at keeping her emotions at bay.
"Because I want to hear it! Whatever it is that she wanted to say. I want to hear it!"
"She’s not going to tell you the truth."
"I don’t care," Ava said. It’s not like she’s going to believe her words. All she really wanted was to hear the woman out. Was that really so bad?
She knew how to keep herself safe from any magick that the woman might use on her words. Ava was also confident that she was more powerful than the Priestess. But she had Matthew.
Well, at least that’s what she liked to believe.
She took a deep breath as she tried to calm herself. She didn’t even realize that the barrier around them was now surrounded by black smoke— something that she recognized as Matthew’s special ability.
She looked around.
"Let me out..." she said.
"No."
"Matthew!" How childish! Ava tried to use her magick and break her own barrier but she soon realized that Matthew used the darkness and reinforced it. Now, the barrier was slowly slipping out of Ava’s control.
She narrowed at him.
"Matthew! I wanted to talk to her!" She widened her eyes in disbelief.
"I said no!"
"You cannot trap me in here!"
He smirked. "Try me."
"You jerk!" Unable to stop herself, Ava stomped on his foot. But he was quick to take a side step, avoiding her boots. "Let me out!"
"Is that the best you can do?"
"What the hell are you trying to do?"
"Keeping you safe!"
"Hiding me isn’t keeping me safe! It is called control and doesn’t appreciate being controlled!"
"Well you just have to break out of here and you can listen to her."
Ava glared at him.
"You cannot trap me in here forever."
"In fact, I can."
"You— " she couldn’t help the anger from bursting out of her. She tried to punch him but he quickly avoid her fist— something that only made her more irritated. This time, Ava maneuvered a kick.
"Combat, eh?" Matthew lifted his eyebrow. For some reason, Ava felt like he was no longer angry but was actually enjoying seeing her angry. He was mocking her.
She bit her lips and let out a barrage of attacks.
She was confident in her martial arts skills but to her surprise, it looked like Matthew knew his martial arts too.
Well... that’s not really surprising, is it?
"I said— " Ava punched and kicked and tried to pin him on the floor. "Let me go!"
"Only if you agree to marry me."
What the hell is this situation? Ava felt really angry earlier! How did it become like this?
"Stop messing around! Let me leave this place!"
"It was you who put a barrier," Matthew said. "I cannot make something like this. Which means... I don’t have the capability to destroy it either."
"What?"
"I just reinforced your magick," Matthew said. "Only you can break your own barrier."
"But..." Matthew said while still avoiding her punches. "If you kiss me. I might just tell you how."
