"What was that all about?" Ava asked the moment she created a barrier inside the room. "That figure— "
"Shouldn’t be here..." Matthew said. "Come!"
Ava gasped when she saw a humanoid shadow appear next to Matthew. She couldn’t see any features and wasn’t even sure if it was a male or female. But she could clearly feel the shadow staring at her.
"Did you find it?" Matthew asked.
"Yes, my lord."
"Where?"
"Near Prince Edward Island."
"Good... watch it. I am certain it would come back." Matthew then looked at Ava. "This is Kimmala. You may call his name once you need something. He will be there."
"Every time?"
"Every time," Matthew nodded.
Ava nodded. She didn’t want to pry into his business but she wanted to know. "What was that thing?"
"It is created in the Shadows. You make know is as a phantom."
"Like a ghost?"
"Not quite. It was formed because of the vengeful souls inside the Shadow Realm. It doesn’t have a physical body but it can only manifest around someone who came from the Shadows."
"Are you saying that someone from the Shadows is hiding near that Island?’ Ava asked. The thing is, that is also the location of the largest pack in this Area. The Rock Growlers with Alpha John.
"We cannot be sure. However, a phantom-like that will always accomplish what it was tasked to do."
"Meaning, it will come back?"
"Yes."
"And that’s why you wanted me to create the barrier as soon as possible?"
"Yes."
Ava nodded. She immediately sat on the floor. Actually, she doesn’t need any magick circle to create a barrier. She was powerful enough to create a hundred barriers. However, Matthew intentionally said that she will be weak and that she needed a magick circle earlier.
Ava thought that Matthew just wanted to hide her abilities. Now, she understood. Matthew must have thought that there was a spy inside this place. So, he wanted to spy to think that Ava would be weak while creating the barrier.
Perhaps.
But Ava would always prefer to act as the bait as she was confident in her skills. And right now, she could feel Matthew’s confidence in her.
She closed her eyes and immediately concentrated.
She doesn’t really need to chant anything as the barrier that they needed was thin and wasn’t really designed to stop anything from going inside. It was just designed to detect any presence of an intruder.
After a few seconds, an invisible shield enveloped the area.
"Two days..." Ava said. "It would last us two days." She got up and looked at Matthew. "What’s wrong?"
Matthew was frowning, lines in between his brows were more prominent. Something must have been bothering him about that phantom.
"Phantoms... don’t just show themselves," Matthew said. "If they are not confident that they would succeed. I have asked my people to check the surroundings and they found nothing out of the ordinary."
Ava sat on the bed. She stared at Matthew as she slowly analyzed his words.
"Are you saying that someone from the shadows should be nearby every time a phantom appears?" she asked.
"Yes."
"And since this place is still a bit far from the Island it means..." Ava’s eyes widened. "Are you saying that there is someone nearby who was actually one of them?"
Matthew clenched his jaw in response.
"It seems that I was wrong. The Shadow people must have started this plan a long long time ago. There is no way that they could infiltrate a small pack if they haven’t infiltrated the bigger packs." Matthew said. ƒrēewebnoѵёl.cσm
"Or the bigger organizations," Ava added as their eyes met.
"Like Trillium."
"Like Trillium."
The two of them said at the same time.
The experiments, the missing people, and the abductions should be somehow connected to the people from the Shadows!
Ava got up.
"This is bigger than we originally thought." Ava bit her lower lip. She thought they are doing experiments to find vessels. But... what if they already found their vessels and just wanted to create more of their kind into this realm?
"Are we even sure they just wanted to run away from their god-forsaken world?" Ava continued. Right now, they aren’t really sure about the goals of these experiments. Aside from looking for a vessel, that is.
"We have to ask the King and Ulva."
"Those two might not have any idea... or their ideas might be lacking," Matthew said.
"Why?"
"The King and Ulva were both cowards. They never go out of that plane. They knew they were safe there. All they wanted was to live longer, away from all the misery that they have suffered inside their realm."
Ava nodded. Now that she thought about it when Ulva was talking to other people in the mirror, someone else demanded some Lycan corpse. That man from the other side seemed like he was ordering Ulva like she was below him.
That could mean that Ulva was just someone supplying them with some experimental specimens.
"Then what are we going to do?" Ava asked.
"Are we going to capture the one who was instructing the phantom?"
Matthew shook his head.
"That would alert the rest," he said.
"Instead, we should follow it," he added.
"But how?" Even his shadows weren’t able to follow the phantom earlier.
"Phantoms are extremely sinister creatures that would prey on the sadness and misery of everyone. It would get attracted to any extreme emotion of misery, devastation, and sadness. The thing about phantoms is that they wanted to feed on someone’s dark emotions. But they cannot do it in that form. So... it would force itself into its master’s body and make it’s master absorbed all the emotions it wanted to have. Once it already possessed its masters body, we kill the master and the phantom."
"So... how are we going to create an extreme emotion of misery and sadness?" she asked.
"You should know how..." Matthew said. "You are the empath."
"I— " Ava frowned. She could feel other people’s emotions, but she couldn’t create emotions! She looked at him, confused. "I don’t understand."
Matthew only smirked at her. "You really are a bit lucky you have someone like me."
"What does that mean?" she asked.
"I will teach you how." Matthew suddenly arrived in front of her. Without warning, he smashed his lips into hers.
What is this? Ava couldn’t help but complain. Which part of this is teaching?
