Ulva removed her coat as she walked inside her room. She walked towards the fireplace and let out a sigh. After getting herself some wine, she took a seat and stared at the fire.
Supporting a younger King wasn’t actually tiring. Drigo was smart and he knew the ins and out of the Kingdom. Moreover, he had been trained to be the King since he was younger.
What was actually exhausting was working with Drigo’s mother, Queen Margery.
The woman refused to let her son rule and is now doing her best to control the Kingdom under the pretense of helping Drigo.
Obviously, this has started to annoy Ulva.
When was the last time that someone openly fought against her? Even the previous Queens never tried to do something like this!
If this was in the past, she would have—
The knocking on the door surprised her. She frowned then waved her hand, opening the door using her magick. Since Matthew left, Ulva stopped accepting apprentices. She wanted to spend her time alone.
"Why have you come?" she asked Queen Margery who just walked in with her long red dress, extravagant pieces of jewelry, and two witch maids.
Since Drigo became the King, he had started to propose the abolish the system that would make the witches maid. Of course, this has been met with a lot of arguments not just from the Queen but from everyone else.
It had been chaotic since then.
However, Drigo never stopped proposing the matter, causing unrest in the council and the whole Kingdom.
"Can’t I come and see you?" Queen Margery ignored the blatant disrespect as she made herself comfortable opposite where Ulva was sitting.
"It’s late Lady Margery," Ulva said. Right now, Margery is no longer queen as the new Queen was already Drigo’s first wife. However, the woman was still acting like she still had power.
"Do you want me to accompany you to your palace?"Ulva asked.
"No need. I came here because I wanted to talk to you."
"Then would you like to talk over wine?"
"No. I am good."
Ulva nodded. She wondered why this woman actually came here.
As if sensing her thoughts, Margery started talking. "I came because I wanted to talk about Drigo’s proposition."
"I apologize, I cannot discuss— "
"I am not going to talk about the proposition Priestess. I wanted to talk about the reason why he thought this was fine."
"Pardon me?"
"Matthew thought this was fine and I believe this has something to do with you and my husband who has yet to talk to me since he left the throne to my son."
"Lady Margery, I think you got this all wrong— "
"The Lycans are raging. They cannot just let go of a tradition that has been going on for centuries. Witches belong to us!"
"Lady— "
"Now before you tell me to get ahold of myself, I wanted you to know that I have talked to the newly appointed Queen and she too agrees with me. Drigo has become unhinged. It’s either you stop him from doing this or... I propose that the Queen will take over his duties."
Ulva looked at the previous Queen, flabbergasted. Then she chuckled. At first, it was a low chuckle until it became condescending laughter. Ulva’s shoulders shook as her stomach started hurting.
For hundreds of years, this was the first time that she had laughed like this. To be fair, this was the first time that someone told her something so... entertaining. She just couldn’t stop herself.
"Stop that— "
Seeing the Queen’s pissed expression, Ulva laughed even harder. She just couldn’t help it.
"I said stop that! How dare you laugh at— "
"At what Lady Margery?" Ulva tried to stop herself from giggling. "At your joke?"
"I am not jesting!"
"It sounded like one to me."
"I am serious! If Drigo— "
"If Drigo steps down, then someone else would become the leader of this plane and you know very well that it’s not the new Queen."
"You— "
"His Highness Matthew had agreed to give Drigo the throne. But he didn’t agree to give it to someone who’s not even a part of the Royal Family."
"She’s a part of— "
"Who are we kidding Lady Margery?" Ulva asked. "If she becomes Queen, there can only be chaos inside this plane. Right now, the other families are thinking that Drigo isn’t fit to be King. They wanted Matthew to reign. Did you really think they would allow Drigo’s wife who isn’t as strong as Matthew rule this plane?"
"The previous King and I can— "
"The Previous King and you aren’t as strong as Matthew and the earlier for us to accept that, the easier it would be for you to move on."
Margery’s face turned ugly. Her face flushed from anger and embarrassment."You have been disrespecting me since Drigo became the King," she stated. Despite her red face, she still sounded calm. "Was it because I am no longer the Queen?"
Before Ulva could answer her, the Queen got up.
"But then again, you never really respected me even when I was still Queen," Margery said.
And Ulva said nothing in response. It was the truth. She never has any respect for this woman.
Lady Margery started walking towards the door.
"At the end of the day, Drigo is still serving the ones who occupy this plane. If he continues to do something that would hard this plane, eventually the rest of the Lycan community would hate him. I would never want that for my child."
Ulva agreed.
The thing is, Drigo never had any choice.
Matthew let him become the King in exchange, he is going to change this plane. The process would be very slow but Ulva was certain Drigo would never stop doing it until he achieve his goal.
"By the way..." Lady Margery looked at Ulva just before she could reach the door. "I know that I am not the King’s mate."
Ulva lifted an eyebrow.
"You tricked me," the Queen said. "I have wasted a century because of you. And for that... you will pay."
