"He is useless now," the man who spoke had a dark look on his face as he leaned against his chair. Then he started smoking his cigar. "We need to tie up loose ends." He added. Because the room was pretty dark, no one could see his features. Only that he was wearing thick eyeglasses.
"I agree..." A woman wearing a red robe spoke. "However, it is still upsetting that we sustain big damage this time. The rogues had been killed and the facility was destroyed. Don’t you think it’s a bit suspicious? I understand that this is a part of the risk that we are willing to take but... we invested millions to keep that place a secret and now Trillium agents are crawling about the area as if they own it!"
"This isn’t the first attack that we have had. Last year, we had to stop the operation in our facility in Alaska because of Trillium. And now this... "
"We have people in Trillium but they are laying low because of what happened since last year. Should we put more pressure on them to do their job? They have been receiving money from us and they aren’t doing their jobs."
"I agree... we can put pressure on our personnel at Trillium. We are giving them those drugs so they could enhance their strength. And they have been demanding more lately. Isn’t it only right that they pay us back?"
"Trillium just got ahold of the bodies of the rogues. I don’t want this to attract any more attention than it already has. I want you to get rid of everyone who knows about the experiments. Get rid of the files. As for our people in Trillium, I want you to put more pressure on them. We have been very lenient and now they have forgotten that they are the ones serving the Circle. They are the ones serving us!"
The people around the table nodded. Seeing this, the man added, "What about the Lycan Plane?"
"I thought we were working on having that plane?" someone man asked.
"Well, there have been some problems lately. The current King is not ours."
’What about the witch?’
"I believe she has been compromised. She refused to answer my calls and had been evading my questions for a long time now. I have already sent someone to fix the small problem. Soon, we will have that plane in our hands."
"How soon is... soon?" the man asked.
"Probably a week or two?"
"Good."
"Our facility in South East Asia has shown some very good improvements lately. It seems that they found someone who is compatible with the new research that we have?"
"If so... isn’t this great news?"
"Not as great as that woman gaining consciousness."
"Oh?" the man with the cigar looked at the bald man who spoke just now. "She woke up?"
"Longer this time..."
"Isn’t that good news?"
"We are currently monitoring everything that she does. I am certain that we will show some improvements very soon."
"Good... very good. That means we are closer to the summoning."
The eerie touches of laughter that followed made the already dark room even darker.
................................
One week later
"I still can’t believe that Trillium would detain a whole pack," Ava said as Samuel started adding cream and sugar to his coffee. After everything, they chose to meet at a coffee shop in Alaska. It was still winter yet Ava was strangely feeling hot. She could feel beads of sweat on her back as she tried to act as calmly as possible.
"I thought it was just the Alpha and the people close to him."
"You are wrong. There is no way that Trillium wouldn’t arrest everyone who knows about the experiments. That and Jude— wanted them arrested."
Jude....
Ava hadn’t seen him since his father died. It was honestly sad that he would just disappear like that but she completely understand him. But hey, at least Francheska was with him, right?
"The rest of the werewolves who don’t know about the experiments will be pardoned."
"How are you going to determine who knows and doesn’t know about it?" she asked.
"You don’t have to worry about that," Samuel smiled at her. "I heard that you were engaged?"
"Who told you that?"
"Matthew talked to me."
"Talked?" Ava laughed. She didn’t know that Matthew would be capable of talking without threatening someone. "Did he threaten you?’
"No."
"Liar."
"He didn’t exactly threaten me. It was more like a warning. Something that I appreciated hearing from your future husband."
"Did he inform you about the engagement?"
"He called you his wife. So I assumed you are going to tie the knot very... very soon."
"We don’t have plans, yet," Ava said. Everything was just so chaotic right now. She didn’t want to do any planning for a wedding. Or maybe they can just elope and find a courthouse that would marry them. It shouldn’t be that big of a deal right? It’s not like Matthew and she has parents or relatives.
Samuel stared at her.
"Gabriella worked with Trillium because she wanted to protect you," Samuel said.
Samuel’s straightforward words made her swallow all the small talk that she was planning so she could delay hearing the truth.
"She hated taking children and adopting them just for the experiments but... she had to do it. She had to pretend to like it so she could be with you. And no. I am not trying to blame you for the mistakes that we did in the past. Those were purely made by our own decision. It had nothing to do with you."
"What about my father?" Ava asked.
"I have never met him," Samuel said. "But he saved Gabriella in the past so she owed him something. When he approached her, Gabriella didn’t hesitate to help."
For a moment, she stayed silent until she finally asked. "What about my mother?’
She already met her father. A powerful man like that was trying to hide Ava away from people who wanted her. So... what about her mother? Where is she? Who is she? And why did she leave?
