ROMEO MCLARY
Romeo jolted up.
"Sir?" a maid stood beside him. She looked concerned as she gave him a glass of water.
Instead of accepting the water, Romeo ignored it. Instead, he looked at his visibly shaking hands. What was that?
What the hell was that about?
Since his wife died, he had been dreaming of her every night.
And he liked to believe that it was his wife’s way of guiding him and urging him to find a vessel for her, a new body that would become hers.
He pushed the maid away.
"Leave..."
"Sir the madam said..."
"Leave me alone!" Romeo said coldly.
In response, the maid bowed. Then she left the room without saying anything.
Romeo glared at the now-closed door. His mother insisted on always keeping it open. He knew she was scared that he would harm himself again. And while he didn’t like it, he had no choice.
His mother was protecting him. His mother loved him.
Or at least this is what his wife told him in his dream.
Thinking back, his wife always knew what to say. Even in his dreams, his wife always gave him the best advice.
He looked out of his large glass windows. The house looked like a castle. It was big, too big. And Romeo hated it.
While this house was large, he couldn’t feel his wife’s presence inside it.
This was because his wife never visited this place in the past.
He walked towards the bookshelf and pulled one of the larger books from the right. The bookshelf made a soft sound. Hearing this, Romeo immediately pushed it revealing a staircase, a pathway that was illuminated by candles.
His mother casted a spell on those candles, making it possible for them to become this place’s source of light without even replacing them. However, Romeo hated it. The only reason why he tolerated his mother was because of his wife’s words.
She told him to let his mother protect him. She even told him that she liked the candles.
Romeo started walking down the stairs, his footsteps echoed against each step that was made of different rocks. The hidden room was made a long long time ago.
It was made by their ancestors to hide their books about magick and to hide their children from the shifters who used to haunt them.
After a few minutes, Romeo finally reached the end of the stairs. It was a large wooden door that looked like it would crumble anytime soon.
He pushed it and a loud creaking sound echoed against the rock walls.
Romeo cursed before he walked inside.
The place was just like a small house. It was underground and was well equipped with food and other stuff that would keep someone alive.
However, this space was not sheltering another existence.
Romeo walked towards the white bed where a beautiful woman was lying down.
His wife.
His beloved wife.
Tears immediately pooled in his eyes.
Another creaking sound echoed when he sat on the bed. Slowly, he held her hand.
"What was that about?" he asked, gently. "What were you trying to say to me?"
Unlike other people, Romeo grew up hating witches simply because he couldn’t use magick. He was not gifted enough to wield it.
So, he pursued the academy.
He wanted to create a name for himself. He wanted to become Romeo Mclary. Not just Amore’s useless son.
And the first time that he felt that his existence actually mattered was when he met her. The beautiful woman working in the university library. She was bubbly and happy and oh goddess... so beautiful.
But life was not fair to Romeo.
How could life let Romeo be happy?
Life cruelly took her away.
Romeo continued staring at the woman who looked like she was just sleeping. She had been preserved by Amore’s magick.
At first, his mother was against the idea of doing this to her but Romeo had begged her. He begged and cried and threatened to kill himself. In the end, Amore had no other choice.
"Why did you do that?" he asked as if the woman would magically open her eyes and answer him.
"I know you didn’t mean it," he said. "You must be tired of waiting too... " he smiled. "But I found ancient texts. You were right. Coming to Barbados was the right thing to do. I found the texts that we were looking for."Slowly, he started stroking her long hair.
"Soon, you won’t be trapped in this body anymore."
"Soon, you will have another vessel." Romeo thought of Ava Woods. Then he smiled. "I found the perfect vessel for you. I am certain you will like her. She’s quite like you too. She fights a lot and talks a lot and... oh... she’s beautiful. Of course, not as beautiful as you. But does that matter?"
Romeo leaned down and kissed the woman’s forehead.
"I will love you no matter what you look like."
After a few minutes, he got up and walked out of the room.
He made sure to close the secret passage before he walked toward his bed. After pressing a button next to his bed, a small box popped out from one of the panels of his headboard.
Romeo gathered the box inside the storage and placed it in his study inside his office.
It was a piece of an ancient text that was believed to be written four thousand years before Christ was born. It was something that contained the secrets of reincarnation. While he couldn’t really understand the texts, Romeo was going to see someone who was an expert of reading Ancient Sumerian texts. His mother had warned him that this wasn’t magick.
That this was different.
It was something else.
But he didn’t care.
Romeo would try everything... and he meant everything just to have his wife in his life again.
He would turn the world around and fight against gods if he needed to, just to have the woman of his life back!
