Chapter 85: Hire Me

"Blackmail..." Ava couldn’t help but scoff at the notion. She looked at Marylis as if silently asking the woman if this was what she wanted to achieve. "How cute..."

"You— "

"You do know I just met him, right?"

"But he values you so— "

"Values? Just from one interaction? I have never met anyone as stupid as you, Broody. Seriously."

"Ava..."

"This has nothing to do with you Marylis." Ava was quick to stop the woman from speaking. "You just became an accomplice of a blackmailer. You should think long and hard about what you did today."

"Ava, please. He just wanted to..."

"Why are you helping him?’ Ava asked. "This isn’t the Marylis that I knew. You must have some reason right?"

"I— "

"Why are you letting someone do something like this Marylis?"

"I saw the future."

"Right," Ava snorted.

"I am telling the truth. Listen... we need to rescue Amelia. We need to get her before she gives birth in a few days."

"And why would I help you? Even her mother refused to find her own daughter. Why should an outsider like me help?" Ava didn’t even know Amelia. There was simply no reason for her to help find the woman.

Ava wasn’t some nice protagonist who would immediately fight any injustice out there. Moreover, what if Amelia had just run away? Patricia refused to find her own daughter. She refused to use magick to track Amelia.

That could mean something.A mother’s refusal to protect her child can very well mean two things.

First, Patricia was the one who took her own daughter. Second, Patricia knew why and where to, her daughter left.

Of course, there are other possibilities but to be honest, Ava didn’t want to think about it anymore. This was none of her business.

"Patricia refused to find her daughter. She believed that Amelia ran away on her own." Broody said as he clenched his jaw. "I have been trying to... talk to you for days because I want your help."

"So you showed up at that party— "

"Because I wanted your help."

"You know I would never help you." Ava rolled her eyes. "So, you wanted to ask me in front of so many people hoping it would somehow change my decision."

Broody pursed his lips. "I have no other choice. You are the only witch that I knew. Patricia refused to see me. All of the witches under her don’t even talk to me. I am desperate."

"Marylis is a witch too. Since she’s so good at helping you, then ask her."

"Ava, you know my magick isn’t enough for a tracking spell."

"Who cares? At the end of the day, being kind should be able to help you, right?" Ava was really irritated. She felt like her fuse was about to go off.

"Ava..."

"Ava, please... Amelia worked with Mr. Graydon. He should know where she is. There is—"

"He doesn’t." Ava cut him off. "And I wouldn’t help you find your wife. If you really want to find her then go to her mother. Patricia knows something." That old woman was like a fox. She was ruthless and manipulative. Ava was sure that the vile thing was hiding something. freёwebnoѵel.com

"But she wouldn’t talk to me."

"As I said... that is none of my business."

"But you are a witch!"

"So is Marylis."

Ava got up. She was done here.

She started walking towards her car. She wasn’t exactly surprised when Broody and Marylis followed her.

"Broody, look. I won’t help you." She already tried it once. She knew that Amelia was inside a place surrounded by iron. "You should find someone else to do it for you."

"Ava please... can’t you just do this for the baby?"

Ava snorted.

"Ava please, if that baby is born, something is going to happen. Please..." Marylis pleaded. "Please... just help us find her. Then ... then Broody would never disturb you again."

"If you want me to find her then... give me money," Ava said as she opened her car door. She slid inside the car and made eye contact with Broody. "Call it... freelancing. I’m not doing it for free."

"You— "

"Nothing in this world is free Broody," Ava said. "Two hundred thousand in cash and I will do the tracking spell. Make a vow with me... a death vow."

"What?"

"If one of us bothers the other after the tracking spell then that person will die."

"Ava you are going overboard!" Marilys interjected.

"Overboard?" Ava scoffed. "Do you hear yourself, Marylis? I can’t believe you just dragged me here for this. Don’t you have other witch friends? Since you really want to help him, you should ask your other friends to help you."

"Would you stop bullying her!?"

"Bullying?" Ava looked at Broody with disbelief. "The woman called me and asked me to come here without informing me that she would bring someone uninvited. And when I react to the unpleasant situation, you call that bullying?" Ava shook her head. She started her car.

Talking to these people was just a waste of time.

"Ava... please... we can’t trust other people now. If you just give me another two minutes. I will tell you what I saw..."

Hearing the helplessness in Marylis’s voice, Ava looked at her. "Two minutes starts now."

"The baby... they will take her to a laboratory. And do some... bad bad things to her. Then... I saw something black. A black smoke possessed the baby’s body. But... the baby won’t be able to withstand it and... and..." Marylis started shaking. Almost immediately, Broody held her shoulder.

"I can’t let it happen. I can’t let a child die." Tears started to stream down Marylis’s cheek. "At first the visions were blurred but now... it’s clearer. I realized that it has become like this because Amelia is supposed to give birth a few days from now."

As usual, Ava couldn’t sense anything from the woman. How could she trust someone like this?

"Then send the money to my account," Ava said. "I can’t help you. But... you can always hire me."

With that, Ava’s car started moving. This time, she didn’t look back.

Call her cold-hearted. Call her selfish.

But she was not going to put her life on the line for the people who betrayed her in the past.
