"What do you mean?" Ava frowned as she stared at Matthew. He was working out and she was just casually sitting there appreciating the view... of the snow.
"Romeo is back in the states. But he is not in his right mind." Matthew started lifting the weights, flexing his muscles attracting Ava’s attention. She cleared her throat and looked at the snow behind him.
She slowly came to appreciate the fact that this room had glass walls that gave her access to the view outside which served as a good distraction from all the muscle show going on in front of her.
"Not in the right mind?" Ava squinted at him. Her attention snapped back to the topic. How infuriating. Would it be possible to talk about important things like these when he wasn’t showing his muscles?
"He is unstable."
"Unstable? You mean... he has become crazier?" freeweɓnovel-cøm
"He has stopped sleeping."
This caught Ava’s full attention. She stopped staring at Matthew’s shirtless frame.
"Stopped sleeping?"
"It took us a long time to gather the information because his mother wanted to keep it quiet. She made sure to keep Romeo’s arrival a secret as a result our people took a long time to infiltrate. The information that we got said that Romeo refused to sleep. They ended up using a lot of pills on him. But then he would always end up crying and screaming after waking up." Matthew started doing some push-ups.
"His mother is now trying to investigate a series of texts that Romeo bought abroad in some market," Matthew added.
"She’s not suspecting you... is she?" Ava couldn’t help but ask.
"She tried to investigate me and the Lycans. She even sent a message to my father, asking him not to intervene in her business or Trillium won’t stand for it."
"She used Trillium to intimidate your father."
"She did," Matthew uttered.
"Then what did your father do?"
"Warned her not to interfere in my business. Or the Lycans would take care of her and Trillium."
"That’s crazy." Ava pursed her lips.
She recalled her conversation with Kieran, from the other night.
Kieran and Erenes made it seem like the King was this awful person who would force Matthew to kill his own brother to become King. Was that really the whole truth?
"But we should be more careful. From now on, you will be working as my personal secretary along with Marko. You will stay with me at all times and you will have your very own security. Aside from this— "
"You want me to stay with you all the time?"
"Yes."
"You want me to work for you?"
"Well..." Matthew smirked. "I didn’t see you as someone who would stay here without doing anything. I am sure you would do something about paying for your own food."
"Oh..." Ava nodded. "Then my body isn’t enough for my food?"
The smile on Matthew’s face widened. "No."
"Touche. How greedy."
"Right. I am greedy."
Ava snorted. "Alright. You can’t just keep me here as a mistress. I have been wanting to talk to you about your company. I mean... technically, I am your employee." Even if Ava was staying here, Matthew had been paying her for the contract that she signed with him. "It would be unfair to get paid without doing all the work."
"Good."
"Now.... About Amelia." This was another reason why Ava decided to come here while Matthew was working out. She convinced herself that this was just her reason for coming here. "I know you already gave me the files about her... but I don’t think it was enough."
"What do you mean?"
"Patricia... refused to find her."
"And I don’t think that is any of your business," Matthew said.
"Right. It is none of my business but a girl should work to pay for her meals."
"Her husband wanted to pay you to work for him?"
Ava nodded. Well... it wasn’t really confirmed yet. But her gut is telling her that Broody would soon show up with the money. And she would have to help him.
"No."
"But— "
"Am I not paying you enough? I can double, triple your salary."
"That’s not the point."
"You can’t work with your ex."
"Why not?"
"You can’t work with any man aside from me."
"That’s a bit over the top."
"I am always over the top."
Ava glared at Matthew who was now doing some squats. Her lips thinned. "It’s just a tracking spell."
"You already told me she’s being kept in a safe facility." Matthew narrowed his eyes on her. "Are you planning on scamming someone?"
Ava shrugged. It sounded cold but... she needed to do it.
Why?
Because she felt like it.
She was already indifferent about Romeo and the past but this girl had that petty side of her. Plus, there was really no harm in trying again and telling him that Amelia was in a secure facility full of iron. God. She would want to see his reaction once he realized that.
Was she being petty?
Absolutely.
Was she being childish?
Definitely.
She’s well aware that the things she was about to do might be morally questionable. But so what?
"Still no," Matthew said while shaking his head. "I don’t want you to do something about things that do not concern you."
"Right," Ava already expected this. So, she batted her eyes at him. "But you will still let me do it."
"I just said— " Matthew got up and rested his hand on his waist. "Stop batting your eyes like that."
"Why?"
"It won’t convince me otherwise."
"Why are you being so mean?" Ava was just having fun. She just wanted to teach both Marylis and Broody a little lesson about disturbing her.
Would that devastate Broody?
It might.
But did she care about it?
Nope.
Big NO.
Broody could burn in hell for all she cared.
Seeing her expression, Matthew sighed.
"Alright."
"But?" Ava lifted an eyebrow. She could already see where this was going.
"But only if you are with me."
She beamed.
"Right."
"And then you are not seeing that ex again."
"I never want to see him again." That was the truth. After Broody ghosted her a year ago, she was so angry, but her emotions changed with time from depressed, to numb, and to eventually indifferent. "Really," she smiled.
"Now... why don’t we address the elephant in the room?" he asked.
"What?"
"The thing that you did to Romeo."
