Chapter 115: Hard to Part
The morning sun filtered through the windows of Yunshen Pavilion, casting tiny specks of light on the floor. Wei Wuxian sat in front of the dressing mirror, pinching rouge between his fingertips and carefully applying it to his cheeks.
The person in the mirror was still pale, the dark circles under his eyes invisible even with concealer. Only the rouge could barely bring out a hint of color. He pulled the corners of his mouth in the mirror, wanting to smile, but the curve wouldn't come.
"Are you ready?" Lan Wangji's voice sounded at the door. He had already packed his luggage. A small suitcase was placed by the door, which mostly contained the medicine and clothes that Wei Wuxian needed.
"Almost there." Wei Wuxian put down his rouge and picked up the lipstick, applying a little to his lips. At least it looked like he had regained some of his rosiness.
He couldn't let Sizhui see the flaw.
As the two walked out of the room, they saw Lan Sizhui standing in the living room, still wearing a hospital gown, obviously having just woken up. Seeing them, the boy's eyes lit up and he ran over quickly: "Daddy, father!"
“Why don’t you sleep a little longer?” Wei Wuxian squatted down, rubbed his hair with a smile, and felt a little relieved when his fingertips touched his warm forehead - it seemed that he had recovered well.
"I can't sleep, and I want to see you guys sooner." Si Zhui said, his eyes fell on the suitcases by the door, and he asked in confusion, "Where are you going?"
Wei Wuxian had already prepared his words. He stood up and tried to sound relaxed. “Your health has barely improved. You still need a few rare medicinal herbs to strengthen your condition. Your father and I will go to the Medicine Valley on the outskirts of the city to look for some. We may need to stay here for a while.”
"Medicine Valley?" Si Zhui blinked. "Is it far?"
"It's not too far," Lan Wangji said calmly, "I'll be back once I find the herbs."
Si Zhui looked at them. Wei Wuxian had a faint smile on his face, his cheeks flushed with a healthy blush. Lan Wangji remained as calm as ever. They both looked much more energetic than they had been a few days ago. Without giving it any more thought, he simply walked forward, gently hugged Wei Wuxian's waist, resting his chin on his stomach, and acted like a spoiled child, "Then you better come back soon. I'll miss you."
The boy's movements were gentle, but Wei Wuxian still felt a sharp pain in his abdomen—a side effect of the blood transfusion; he was most afraid of such touching and shaking. He subconsciously held his breath, his fingertips quietly clenching the corner of his clothes, but a smile remained on his face. "Okay, I'll be back soon."
Si Zhui didn't notice anything unusual about him, he just hugged him and nuzzled him: "Daddy, you have to take good care of yourself and don't stay up late like before."
"I know, little butler." Wei Wuxian smiled and pinched his face, but his eyes were secretly red at an angle that he couldn't see.
This child is always worrying about others, but he doesn't know that the person he should worry about the most at this moment is himself.
Lan Wangji stood aside, watching Wei Wuxian's slightly pale face and tightly pursed lips. He felt a pang of pain in his heart. He wanted to ask Sizhui to let go, but Wei Wuxian stopped him with a look.
Si Zhui held him for a long while before letting go and looking up at Wei Wuxian: "Daddy, why do you look a little pale? Are you tired?"
“No,” Wei WuXian immediately avoided his gaze and turned to pick up the suitcase. “Maybe I didn’t eat breakfast this morning and my blood sugar is a little low. We’re leaving now. You have to listen to your eldest uncle and uncle, take your medicine on time, and get enough rest.”
"Yes!" Si Zhui nodded vigorously and looked at Lan Wangji again, "Father must also take good care of Daddy."
"I will." Lan Wangji's voice was slightly hoarse.
The two of them walked out with their suitcases, and Si Zhui followed behind to see them off. When they reached the door, Wei Wuxian suddenly stopped, turned around, and looked at Si Zhui deeply.
The young man stood in the morning light, his features clear and his smile bright, already looking somewhat more upright. It was great that his child was finally safe and sound.
Wei WuXian turned his head away, not daring to look again, fearing that if he looked any longer, he would burst into tears and reveal his flaw.
"Let's go." He took Lan Wangji's hand and left quickly.
Lan Wangji turned around, waved to Sizhui, then held Wei Wuxian's hand tightly and quickly followed his footsteps.
Si Zhui stood at the door, watching their backs disappear into the corridor before reluctantly returning to the ward. He didn't see Wei Wuxian suddenly lean against the wall after turning the corner, panting violently, his face as pale as paper. The smile he had forced on just a moment ago had long since vanished, leaving only the pain that was difficult to conceal.
Lan Wangji quickly supported him, took out the painkillers he carried with him, and fed them to him: "How is it? Does it hurt?"
Wei WuXian nodded, his voice weak: "It's okay... It will be fine in a while..."
He leaned in Lan Wangji's arms, closed his eyes, and finally couldn't help but let his tears fall.
I’m sorry, Sizhui.
Dad lied to you again.
But Daddy had no choice.
As long as you are well, I am willing to endure any pain, even if it means keeping it a secret from you forever.
Lan Wangji held him, patting his back gently, without saying a word. The corridor was silent, with only Wei Wuxian's suppressed breathing and the sound of footsteps in the distance.
After a long while, Wei Wuxian's breathing finally calmed down. He wiped his tears and smiled at Lan Wangji, "Let's go. If we don't leave now, someone will see us."
Lan Wangji nodded, carefully supported him, and the two of them slowly walked out of Yunshen Pavilion.
The sunlight outside the door was a bit dazzling, and Wei Wuxian squinted subconsciously. Lan Wangji immediately took off his outer robe and draped it over him, blocking out most of the sunlight. "It's windy, put it on."
"Yeah." Wei Wuxian leaned against him and responded softly.
The car slowly drove away from Yunshen Pavilion. Wei Wuxian turned around and watched the familiar building getting farther and farther away until it disappeared from his sight.
He knew that from today on, he would have to get used to the pain, get used to the medicine, and get used to licking his wounds silently in a place where Sizhui was not around.
But it doesn't matter.
As long as he thought about Si Zhui growing up healthily in the sunshine and that Lan Wangji was by his side, he had the courage to keep going.
The car drove towards the small courtyard on the outskirts of the city. The road ahead might be full of thorns, but as long as the two of them walked hand in hand, no matter how difficult the road was, they would be able to walk out of the warm sunshine.
