Chapter Six: Feeling Guilty Towards Her

Undeterred, Zhou pushed Wei Jing aside, lifted her skirt, and stormed into the house.

His sharp eyes swept across the room inch by inch, as if trying to drag out that damned bastard!

It was both out of annoyance and a desire to vent anger.

Why was it her gentle and considerate son who died on the battlefield, instead of Wei Jing, that filthy mistress?

Ironically, her son didn't even leave behind a corpse, yet this bastard was able to return to the capital, be granted a title, and establish his own household, which greatly enhanced his reputation.

Zhou was filled with resentment!

If a woman can indeed be found in this house today, she can file a complaint before the emperor in the future, which will surely ruin Wei Jing's reputation and prevent him from becoming complacent and forgetting his roots.

After looking around twice, Zhou saw nothing. She turned to look at Lu Yun, who was also astonished.

Strange, could she have misread it?

But now he couldn't let Zhou go to Jiang Mingwei's courtyard again, otherwise his intentions would be too obvious.

"Mother, did you see clearly that there was a woman in this room?"

Zhou snorted coldly, angrily flicking her sleeve, "It's best if it's not true! Don't forget, if it weren't for your elder brother, you wouldn't be where you are today. You wouldn't be too much even if you observed three years of mourning for him!"

“I will never forget my elder brother’s kindness, so there is no need for my mother to remind me again.”

Zhou glared at Wei Jing and stormed off.

Lu Yun bit her lower lip, unwilling to follow her steps. When she reached the door and turned around, she saw that the room was dimly lit, and Wei Jing's gloomy eyes were fixed on her, which made her feel a sense of fear and trembling...

The effects of the drug surged again, and Wei Jing's forehead veins bulged. He staggered forward, closed the door, and walked towards the corner.

His room used to be a woodshed, and there was a cellar that no one knew about, which was cold and damp.

In his haste, he had no choice but to hide Jiang Mingwei there.

Now that the crisis is over, it's time to let her up.

But a metallic sweetness welled up in his throat, and with a soft "plop," the alluring blood spilled onto the ground.

Wei Jing swayed precariously, his vision went black, and he completely lost consciousness...

Inside the cellar, Jiang Mingwei huddled up from the cold, but only heard a muffled thud before falling silent again.

A bad feeling welled up inside her, and she raised her hand to knock on the hidden door.

"Second brother, second brother, are you there?!"

There was no response. In the pitch-black space, she could only hear her own breathing.

The night grew thicker, and the cellar grew even colder.

Jiang Mingwei rubbed her hands together vigorously, trying to slow down the loss of body temperature, but to no avail.

Why am I so unlucky? Nothing good ever comes of running into Wei Jing. If I survive, I really need to stay far away from him next time!

She closed her eyes, and her consciousness gradually faded away...

The next day.

As dawn broke, Wei Jingjian awoke with a splitting headache, his brows furrowed. Memories of the previous night flooded his mind.

He picked up the teacup on the table and took a sip, then was drugged. Jiang Mingwei, who came to visit him, mistook him for the one who drugged him and almost had sex with her...

Later, due to excessive internal heat from practicing internal energy, he vomited blood and fainted.

Yes, sister-in-law!

They quickly opened the cellar door and saw Jiang Mingwei curled up, her face as pale as paper.

Feeling guilty, Wei Jing pulled her into his arms; the woman was as cold as ice.

"Sister-in-law, sister-in-law, wake up?"

He placed his trembling fingers under Jiang Mingwei's nose.

Only when he sensed a slight fluctuation did his heart relax. He quickly channeled his inner energy into her until her complexion returned to a rosy hue.

Hua Cui waited in the courtyard all night, but her young mistress didn't return. She was so anxious that her eyes were swollen from crying.

Just as she was about to go out and ask the Second Master to find someone, she saw him carrying Jiang Mingwei as he walked in from outside.

"Miss!"

Hua Cui burst into laughter through her tears and was about to step forward when she was forced back by Wei Jing's cold gaze.

Which room does your master sleep in?

Hua Cui turned away timidly and led Wei Jing to the bedroom.

Wei Jing carefully laid Jiang Mingwei down, covered her with a brocade quilt, and then turned around.

"Take good care of your sister-in-law."

Hua Cui hesitated for a moment, then mustered her courage to ask, "May I ask, Second Master, where was Miss last night? Why did she not return home all night?"

Wei Jing placed his hands behind his back, his eyes sharp as an eagle, and spoke each word clearly.

“Last night, my sister-in-law saw an assassin sneak into my courtyard. The situation was critical, and she had no choice but to spend the night in the cellar. She caught a cold, and I have already called a doctor to treat her. As her personal maid, you should know how to explain this to others!”

Hua Cui knew this was a warning not to speak carelessly, and after nodding, Wei Jing turned away.

Before leaving, he glanced at Jiang Mingwei with a guilty look.

Once the footsteps faded away, Jiang Mingwei slowly opened her eyes and said in a hoarse voice, "Go get me a glass of water."

"Miss, you're awake? I'll be right there!"

Hua Cui was both surprised and delighted. She quickly poured water for Jiang Mingwei, helped her up, and sipped the water slowly, which soothed her dry throat.

Actually, she had been awake for a while.

Wei Jing channeled his internal energy into her, and she gradually woke up after her body warmed up. However, if she opened her eyes, the atmosphere between the two of them would definitely become even more awkward.

I pretended to be unconscious the whole way until I got back to the courtyard.

Last night really wore her out, but it's alright. Wei Jing feels guilty towards her, and he's always been a man of great loyalty and courtesy. If she ever asks for anything in the future, he might not refuse her. It's an unexpected bonus.

Seeing Jiang Mingwei coughing weakly, Hua Cui wiped away her tears with heartache.

"The Wei family is going too far! Miss is the daughter of the Grand Secretary, and she was the center of attention before she got married, but she's being treated like dirt after marrying into this family!"

"No matter how glorious things were before, let's just live our lives well now. Okay, I'm going to sleep a little longer."

Hua Cui nodded repeatedly and tucked the blanket around Jiang Mingwei.

"Miss, go to sleep. The doctor is here; I'll greet him."

Jiang Mingwei closed her eyes wearily, sighing helplessly in her heart.

After her father's death, the original owner gradually drifted apart from her brother, leaving her isolated and helpless. Otherwise, how could Zhou Shi dare to treat her so arrogantly?

It seems that in the future, I will still need to find a powerful backer and cling to the right people. At least within the Wei family, I cannot allow myself to be bullied for no reason again!

As a person, even if you don't steam buns, you still have to stand up for yourself. She's not that spineless coward from the original owner of this body...

As Jiang Mingwei fell into a deep sleep, Lu Yun, who was far away in the west courtyard, let out a scream.

She looked at the scene in the hall with a look of horror. The mangled, bloody thing was lying on the ground, howling and rolling around, but you could still make out a human shape.

"Second Young Master, what do you mean by this?"

Her shoulders hunched, Lu Yun's beautiful eyes misted over as she looked at Wei Jing with a pitiful expression.

He was a seasoned veteran of many battles, and his entire being exuded a chilling aura that was truly intimidating.

“Yesterday I was accidentally poisoned, and it was discovered that this servant had added something to my tea. Under severe torture, he confessed that it was Miss Lu who ordered it, so naturally I have to come and find out the truth!”

"Miss Lu, is it or isn't it?"

With her hands tightly clutching the handkerchief, Lu Yun's tears flowed just right.

"What do you mean by that, Second Young Master? Are you saying I poisoned you? How could that be!"

But as soon as she finished speaking, the bloody mess suddenly surged toward her.

"Miss Lu, save me..."
