As the sun set, towering fiery clouds ignited the entire sky.
"With weather like this, tomorrow will probably be another sunny day!" On the way back, Jiang Ling looked at the farmers kneeling in the wheat fields, kowtowing to the sky, and couldn't help but sigh and think helplessly.
"Mom! Big brother is amazing! He brought all of these back by himself!" As soon as Jiang Ling pushed open the wooden door of the old house, Jiang Suihe and Jiang Wenxi came to greet her. Jiang Wenxi pointed to a corner of the old house and said.
Upon hearing this, Jiang Ling looked over and saw that a considerable amount of firewood and hay had been neatly stacked in one corner of the old house. Smiling, Jiang Ling walked over to Jiang Yaojie and said, "Yaojie, thank you for your hard work!"
Jiang Yaojie was slightly taken aback when he heard Jiang Ling's praise. This was the first time he had heard such words in all the years he had lived in Lujia Village. He murmured somewhat awkwardly, "It's nothing."
Before he finished speaking, Jiang Yaojie walked towards the pile of firewood. He carried some firewood and hay to the center of the yard, skillfully lit them, and then took out three sweet potatoes from the corner and put them in the fire.
Before long, the unique sweet aroma of sweet potatoes wafted from the fire. Jiang Yaojie took a stick, pulled the sweet potatoes out of the fire, and placed them in front of Jiang Ling and her daughter.
Jiang Ling was a little puzzled. She looked at Jiang Yaojie and said, "Yaojie, why aren't you eating?"
"I'm not hungry. You and your sister can eat together!" Jiang Yaojie said, head down.
Jiang Ling, seeing Jiang Yaojie secretly swallowing, didn't intend to call him out. She simply broke off a large piece of her sweet potato and placed it in Jiang Yaojie's hand, saying, "Yaojie, we're family. We should eat together, unless..."
At this point, Jiang Ling paused and emphasized, "Unless you don't want to acknowledge me as your mother and your two younger sisters!"
"I didn't!" Jiang Yaojie replied, his face flushed as he clenched his fists.
“Okay, since you say you don’t have it! Then you have to eat this half sweet potato! If you don’t eat it…” As she said this, Jiang Ling’s gaze fell on Jiang Suihe and Jiang Wenxi.
"Suihe, Wenxi, you two remember this: if your older brother doesn't eat, neither of you are allowed to eat anything either!" Jiang Ling said sternly.
Upon hearing this, Jiang Suihe and Jiang Wenxi obediently put the sweet potatoes aside and looked at Jiang Yaojie with watery eyes.
Jiang Yaojie remained silent for a while before loosening his clenched fist, taking the large piece of sweet potato from Jiang Ling's hand, and stuffing it into his mouth.
After dinner, Jiang Ling said to Jiang Yaojie, "Get some rest. We have to go to town with Mom early tomorrow morning!"
Jiang Yaojie nodded and walked into the small house, while Jiang Ling also took her two daughters back to her own house.
Perhaps because she hadn't rested well yesterday, or perhaps because she was tired from working today, Jiang Ling slept very soundly that night.
As dawn broke, Jiang Ling opened her eyes. Thinking about her trip to Changning Town today, she quickly got out of bed. As soon as she opened the door, she found Jiang Yaojie already standing there.
"Yaojie, aren't you sleepy getting up so early?" Jiang Ling asked hurriedly.
“I’m not sleepy. It’s almost dawn. Let’s go. Uncle Lu’s oxcart will be leaving soon!” Jiang Yaojie shook his head and walked towards the gate.
The two quickly arrived at the village entrance and boarded Uncle Lu's oxcart.
It takes at least half an hour to get from Lujia Village to Changning Town by car, and the people in the car soon started chatting about everyday matters.
Jiang Ling didn't want to get involved in these topics, but Aunt Wangde suddenly leaned closer to her and whispered with a gossipy look, "Jiang, I heard you hit your mother-in-law?"
Jiang Ling felt helpless after hearing what Aunt Wangde said, especially since it was such an awkward topic that it was difficult to talk about or not talk about it. So she simply lowered her head, closed her eyes, and pretended to be asleep to brush it off.
Jiang Ling's silence made Aunt Wangde a little embarrassed. She stared at Jiang Ling blankly for a long time, rolled her eyes at Jiang Ling, and clicked her tongue, saying, "Tch! Now you feel embarrassed and don't want to speak?"
Although Jiang Ling was somewhat annoyed upon hearing this, she remained silent with her eyes closed. Jiang Ling knew very well that these arguments would do her no good.
The oxcart slowly drove through the gate of Changning Town, and Jiang Ling and Jiang Yaojie were the first to get off.
Jiang Ling walked to the pawnshop entrance, glanced at Jiang Yaojie beside her, and said, "Yaojie, you must be hungry this morning. Go to the wonton stall up ahead and get two bowls of wontons. I'll come find you in a bit!"
Jiang Yaojie opened his mouth, but ultimately said nothing, simply nodding and walking towards the wonton stall.
While Jiang Yaojie was at the wonton stall, Jiang Ling quickly hid in an empty alley, opened the shop system, glanced at the copper coin, and then tapped it.
With a "whoosh," Jiang Ling's pocket sank, and a handful of copper coins appeared in it. Jiang Ling glanced around, and after confirming that no one was in the alley, she quickly walked out.
This was Jiang Yaojie's first time in Changning Town. He looked at the wonton stall steaming in front of him, hesitated for a moment, and then quickly chose the most secluded table to sit down.
As soon as he sat down, the proprietress came over and asked him what he wanted to eat. Jiang Yaojie, who was already reserved, became even more nervous. He fidgeted with the hem of his clothes, his eyes glancing back in the direction he had come from.
He only breathed a sigh of relief when he saw Jiang Ling's figure slowly appear in his eyes.
"Why don't you want wontons? Didn't I just tell you to order two bowls of wontons first?" Jiang Ling asked softly, looking at the empty table.
"No...no...it's just...I just think one bowl is enough..." By the end, Jiang Ling could barely hear Jiang Yaojie's voice.
