Chapter 7 Matchmaker

The homes of the wedding matchmaker and the funeral matchmaker happened to be on the east side and west side respectively. When she arrived, the wedding matchmaker was sitting under the eaves picking vegetables.

"Aunt Yan." This aunt's name is quite good, the swallow brings good news.

Aunt Yan was about forty years old this year, with a round face and a smile that made her look blessed. No wonder everyone wanted to find her for matchmaking; it was a joy to behold.

Yan Gu heard the voice, looked up, went over it in her mind, and asked uncertainly, "Is it Xiaoyue?"

But the person in front of her was a little different from the Xiaoyue she had seen before. Yan Gu couldn't tell exactly what the difference was.

In the past, Xiaoyue always kept her head down, didn’t look at people and didn’t like to talk.

Jiang Yue nodded in response, "Aunt Yan, I need your help."

Aunt Yan asked her daughter-in-law to wash the vegetables and then brought the person into the house.

Jiang Yue asked her not to rush to pour the water and went straight to the point, "Aunt Yan, I want to ask you to help me find a good family."

Aunt Yan was shocked. How could a good girl come to discuss marriage on her own? Even if her parents died early, didn’t she still have her uncle and aunt?

"Xiaoyue, why are you so fierce?"

It would be bad to tell this to others, as it would affect my reputation.

Jiang Yue lowered her head slightly, her fingers turning white, and looked at Chuchu pitifully. "Today, my uncle went to see Qi Po."

After these words came out, Yan Gu took a deep breath, "You, your uncle actually dared to do this?"

Everyone in the village knew that Jiang Dajin and his wife had accepted money and promised to take good care of their niece. Now they were actually selling their niece. Aren't they afraid of being drowned in the saliva of the villagers?

But she thought of Eugenie's shrewish behavior, and thought that maybe she really wasn't afraid. A few scoldings wouldn't affect her eating and drinking.

She looked at the thin girl in front of her, who was not much older than her own daughter, and felt pity for her.

"But even if I find someone, can you decide your own marriage?"

Jiang Yue was thinking, if she could find a good one, wouldn't she just make it a done deal? In the village, face can be a killer, but for her, it can also help others.

Just like Eugenie, rumors couldn't affect her. Anyway, she didn't plan to make close friends with the villagers in the future. It would be troublesome.

A natural disaster is coming, who cares about fame or not? By then, the widow will come to the door on her own initiative.

Damn it! If it weren’t for the fact that unmarried girls here wouldn’t be given a household registration or land, she would never find a man to serve her!

But she couldn't say that, so she just said vaguely, "As long as the family I find is good, I'll go and ask my uncle and aunt, and they should agree."

Although Yan Gu felt that there was little hope, she still agreed to the request.

"Tell me what kind you want?"

Jiang Yue secretly exerted herself, pinched her thigh, and blushed. She whispered, "If you want someone who is honest and willing to work, the fewer people in the family, the better. As long as they are hardworking, being poor doesn't matter."

She just wants someone who is honest and obedient, preferably one whose parents are both dead and who has a car and a house.

Aunt Yan laughed, "Everyone wants a large family, with as many brothers and sisters as possible. Why do you prefer a quiet family? That way, when you run into trouble, there's no one to help you."

Isn't this the same thing that happened to Jiang Yue's parents? If her parents had more siblings, their marriage wouldn't be so arbitrarily controlled by one uncle and aunt.

Jiang Yue shook her head and whispered, "If there are fewer people, they won't despise me anymore."

Fewer people means less trouble! Stay away from all the conflicts between parents-in-law and sisters-in-law!

Aunt Yan felt bad. This girl's conditions were indeed not good. But she couldn't choose someone with those conditions just because of that. She was still young and had no one to teach her.

"I'm telling you, don't be afraid. Having more people means more benefits. You can work in the fields faster than other families. Look at Uncle Wu at the village head. He bought a husband for his daughter, but there are only three people in his family who can work. They can't even handle the fields. Their life is very hard!"

Yan Gu said with a sigh.

Jiang Yue frowned slightly and asked curiously, "Can my husband still buy it?"

"Yes, I can. Every year there are people buying and selling things in this town. Those people are either exiled for committing crimes, or servants of wealthy families who were beaten and sold for doing something wrong, or they are selling themselves because their hometown has suffered a disaster..."

Aunt Yan was a matchmaker and was familiar with the surrounding area. She was well-informed about the situation in the town and could speak coherently about it.

"Then it must be very expensive to buy a working adult."

Unexpectedly, Aunt Yan shook her head, as if to say, "Don't you understand?" "Children are actually more expensive than adults. Look, an adult has more to eat and wear, and if they encounter a disobedient child, they won't listen even if you beat them. Children are much easier to discipline."

“But it’s a lot of work.”

"Silly girl, whose parents can't work? Even a young boy can carry heavy bags. It's not rare."

"How much difference can there be between the price for adults and children?"

"Two taels for adults, three taels for children."

Aunt Yan was startled by her pensive look and patted her hands. "Don't be tempted! If the person you bought runs away, you won't be able to find him again! Just listen to me, I will definitely find you a good one."

Jiang Yue was indeed moved. It didn’t matter if she ran away. She could just become a widow and establish a new household!

But she still accepted it with gratitude, "Thank you, Auntie."

Aunt Yan agreed to give me news in three days.

Jiang Yue took out something wrapped in leaves from her bosom and placed it on the table, saying casually, "Gu, this isn't a good thing. Give it to Xiao Shitou to sweeten his mouth."

Little Stone is Aunt Yan's grandson.

Yan Gu thought that these were wild fruits she picked from the mountain, so she didn't refuse.

After everyone left, she asked her daughter-in-law to give it to Xiao Shitou.

The daughter-in-law came over with her three-year-old child in her arms. She opened the box casually and was shocked. She shouted, "Mom, it's white flour buns! And eggs!"

Little Stone didn't remember much, but he was greedy. When he smelled the steamed buns, his mouth watered and he started to cry out for food. His mother slapped him lightly on the butt a few times.

Aunt Yan walked out of the house quickly, wanting to call the person back, but she didn't know how she left and disappeared in a moment.

She went back to the house and looked at the big steamed bun on the table.

Being able to eat all-you-can-eat whole grains was a luxury for them; white flour was a delicacy only available during the Chinese New Year. Holding this large steamed bun in the palm of your hand, you could tell it was solid with a gentle squeeze.

Jiang Yue: I don’t want to be so generous, but I don’t have any multi-grain steamed buns on me…

Aunt Yan cleaned the kitchen knife and cut the buns into small pieces so that everyone in the family could have a taste.

The buns were made of fine white flour and were sweet when chewed. Seeing the satisfied expressions on her family's faces, she thought to herself, since she had received such a valuable gift, she must make sure Xiaoyue got what she wanted.

She didn't know that Jiang Yue, who had left home, had given up on getting married.

Since you can buy someone, why not just buy someone who is honest, obedient and suits your taste and marry him into your family?
