Soon, each of the three women tried it out, and it worked perfectly. They all came out smiling. After Wang Lun filled in the drain, he couldn't resist asking himself a question, though he said he needed to pee urgently—but who knows for sure? Wang Lun's experience proved it worked well; his efforts were worthwhile. There was a drawback: the drain seemed a bit too wide, making squatting a little inconvenient; he needed to spread his legs wider. However, these weren't major problems; as long as the toilet worked, that was good enough.
Wang Lun carried a pile of hay to the rabbit pen, placing it in a corner, before moving all the rabbits from the shelter there. The three girls, hearing about catching rabbits, all wanted to come along. There was no other way but for them to join in. The rabbits scurried around the shelter, and the three girls ran around inside, treating catching rabbits like a game. Wang Lun didn't mind; as long as they were having fun, that was all that mattered.
There's nothing to do on this deserted island, so the fact that they're having so much fun is something Wang Lun hadn't expected.
It took the three girls almost half an hour to catch all six rabbits. By then, they were all panting heavily, and sweat was dripping from their brows. Although they were exhausted, they were all very happy.
One woman carried two rabbits and followed Wang Lun to the rabbit pen. Wang Lun told them to just throw the rabbits in, but they put them on the ground instead. As soon as they were put down, the rabbits ran away. Wang Lun threw in a handful of grass and said, "Let's go, let the rabbits get used to it first." The three women reluctantly left the rabbit pen.
The three women went straight back to their house, while Wang Lun took a walk around the campsite. The wild onions he had planted earlier were growing well; he could pick some in a while to stir-fry with meat. The haystacks in the shed were much less than usual, so he needed to replenish them sometime. Similarly, the firewood in the shed was running low, so he needed to find time to chop more to keep on hand. Now that the shelter was basically useless, Wang Lun planned to find some time to reorganize the campsite and optimize its layout.
Wang Lun plans to demolish the shelter and then pave a gravel path from the entrance all the way to the door. There are four branches in the path: one leads to the pond along the drainage ditch, another to the chicken coop in the backyard, another also along the drainage ditch leading to the bathroom, and the last one to the shower room. Along these branches, Wang Lun plans to plant some wild vegetables and onions. The pond side will be used to grow other crops; he hasn't decided what to plant yet, he'll plant whatever he finds suitable. Later, Wang Lun plans to expand the pond, build a fence around it, and construct a roof. This way, people can play in the pond when it's hot. Of course, this will also prevent leaves, small animals, and other debris from polluting the water.
Wang Lun plans to leave the space in front of the house as an open area, a place to occasionally eat outside or sit and enjoy the view. He'll keep the shed as a storage area, mainly to store hay and firewood to prevent them from getting wet in the rain. As for the section of land between the house and the shed, Wang Lun hasn't decided what to do with it yet; it might be used for processing timber or firing pottery, so he'll leave it empty for now.
After walking around, Wang Lun realized there was still one thing he hadn't done: the digging of the drainage ditches around the house. Some ditches had been dug before, but they were just dirt ditches; Wang Lun planned to pave them with stones to make them more stable. But with so many things to do, he needed to prioritize and arrange things according to their urgency.
Wang Lun thought for a moment. He decided to put the drainage ditch project aside for now, and also put the camp's organization aside for the time being. The most important thing now was to stock up on some hay and firewood, and then go to the beach to boil some more salt. After all, they didn't have much salt left.
After thinking it over, Wang Lun went inside to discuss it with Li Ling and the others. He found a stool and sat down, saying, "Our camp construction is almost complete, which is something to celebrate. We'll have an extra meal tonight." The three of them were immediately excited at the mention of an extra meal. After all, they'd been eating wild vegetables and fish stew every day for the past few days and were getting tired of it. Liu Ruoling asked, "Could we get some pancakes too?" Li Ling and Liu Ruoxi also looked at Wang Lun. Wang Lun thought for a moment and said, "Hmm, that's a question." All three of them stared intently at Wang Lun. Knowing he couldn't tease them any longer or he'd get a beating, he said, "Why are you asking me that? Li Ling is in charge of logistics." Liu Ruoling immediately turned to look at Li Ling, while Liu Ruoxi also stared at her. Li Ling, feeling the two staring at her, said, "Since it's my decision, then let's eat! Make plenty, eat your fill!" Liu Ruoling immediately cheered.
Wang Lun let them have their fun for a while, and once they quieted down, he said, "I just took a walk around the camp and thought about the layout. Based on priorities, I've decided that starting tomorrow, we'll chop firewood for two days, and then on the third day, we'll go to the beach to boil salt." Li Ling said, "That's true, we don't have much firewood left. There's one bundle inside the house and another outside, but that'll only last two or three days. We also need to solve the salt problem; we were almost out of salt before, and we're currently eating the salt that Liu Ruoxi and the others brought." Wang Lun said, "It's alright. Now that our camp is built, there's not much to do about construction. We can focus on finding food and living a peaceful life." Liu Ruoling laughed and said, "Won't you forget about home?" Wang Lun said, "Why do you say that?" Liu Ruoling pointed to Liu Ruoxi and Li Ling and said, "Now you have three beautiful women with you." Li Ling and Liu Ruoxi blushed slightly. Wang Lun said, "What are you thinking about?" He then tapped Liu Ruoling on the head.
Ignoring them, Wang Lun changed the subject, saying, "There's still some time, so you can start preparing dinner. We've made a lot today, so let's eat early. I'll go widen the ditch a bit more." Liu Ruoling exclaimed, "I'll go too!" Wang Lun said, "If you don't go, you'll be cooking for them, and you'll have to do heavy work tomorrow." Only then did Liu Ruoling reluctantly sit down. So Wang Lun grabbed a military shovel and went out to dig the drainage ditch in the backyard. Li Ling and the other two each carried a pot to the pond to fetch water, preparing to cook dinner.
When Wang Lun arrived at the backyard, he walked around and thought about how to improve the drainage ditch. Currently, the ditch flows directly down the earthen cliff. Wang Lun considered letting it flow down, but the impact would be too great and might carve a pit in the yard. However, after thinking it over, he realized there were no other good solutions. Whether digging or filling, the workload would be enormous. Since that was the case, he decided it was better to just let it flow down; at worst, he could lay a layer of stones underneath.
Once Wang Lun had a plan, he began to widen the drainage ditch. Since there were two roofs, the ditch had to be expanded to drain water into it; otherwise, the water wouldn't be able to flow out. Wang Lun then poured the soil he dug from the ditch into the gaps in the earthen roof, filling it in.
